Senior Power Systems Modeller- Energy Operations
Work location: Perth. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday. With flexibility to travel to site when required (approximately once per month for 2-3 days). Initially travel will only be within WA.
Fortescue are looking for a Senior Power System Modeller who has:
- Experience in high and medium voltage electrical power and protection systems and the modelling of these systems in DigSilent PowerFactory.
- Experience in the analysis of harmonic issues associated with Motor Drives
This is a Perth based role, starting in January 2023, reporting to the Energy Operations Compliance Principal. It is an excellent and varied opportunity to provide modelling and other specialist services to enable the Energy Operations team to reliably maintain and operate Fortescue’s growing energy asset portfolio across the Pilbara. The role demands a strong focus on teamwork to achieve required outcomes and the promotion of high engineering standards.
In this role you will work as part of the modelling team in the configuration of the power systems for Fortescue’s power distribution and transmission network with particular emphasis on modelling harmonics and developing solutions for harmonic issues.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Analyse, model and optimise power systems to ensure power quality and performance using DigSilent Power Factory or similar programs.
- Support team members in the collection of relevant data, build and analyse power systems models.
- Assess power system performance with respect to stability and reliability standards.
- Undertake harmonic analysis and assist in the design of any required mitigations
- Resolve power generator and system performance issues and provide technical solutions.
- Provide technical mentoring and coaching to our energy operations technical staff.
- Undertake transmission and distribution planning studies and analysis
- Contribution to study reports for validation of electrical system designs.
Qualifications and skills required:
- Electrical Engineering degree (Member of Engineers Australia or eligible for membership as MIEAust) & extensive experience in design of power system projects (minimum 10 years)
- Experience with modelling MV systems in DigSilent PowerFactory
- Masters or PhD in electrical engineering would be highly regarded
- Experience working in mining or equivalent heavy industry will be highly regarded.
- Knowledge and experience in high and medium voltage protection systems, and/or generator control systems for large scale grid connected traditional and renewable generation and BESS.
