About the Role

Reporting to the Manager Process Safety Engineering, this influential role is part of Process Safety team within the BHP Maintenance and Engineering Centre of Excellence (MECoE).

As a technical Subject Matter Expert this role offers global stakeholder engagement to promote Process Safety Management support continuous improvement in critical Process Safety procedural and engineering controls that ultimately manage loss of containment of hazardous substances risk at an acceptable level.

You will support a team that manages and leads global standardisation initiatives to enable improved business outcomes as well as:  

  • Support the Manager Process Safety Engineering in implementation of the framework.
  • Support the MECoE engineering Process Safety Management standards, procedures and guidelines including development and periodic reviews.
  • Provide engineering governance of Process Safety Management across BHP via Process Safety Key Risk indicators, business KPIs and relevant performance dashboards.
  • Facilitate delivery and implementation of effective, assurance processes through Process Safety Standards across the life cycle of BHP process safety applicable facilities.
  • Ensuring process safety risks are identified, assessed and managed according to the Corporate GLDs and MECoE Systems and Procedures.
  • Integrate with the Process Safety engineering community across the organization whilst providing oversight to process safety engineering and technical capability building.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise, mentoring and support to the group, providing the enabling tools to achieve success.
  • Develop and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships across a wide group of stakeholders and across departments.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or an aligned discipline
  • Significant Process Safety Engineering practitioner experience in the Petrochemical/, Petroleum or Mining industry.
  • Experience in Mining operations with Process Safety Management/ loss of containment risk management exposure, including auditing and assurance.
  • Understanding of industry Process Safety Management models and its elements.
  • Knowledge and experience to apply risk management techniques, tools, software / simulation models to support right decisions for any process safety risk exposure.
  • Ability to review / challenge Functional Safety reports, QRA (Qualitative Risk Analysis), HAZOPs, PHAs, dispersion models and facilitate hazard identification and risk assessment workshops.
  • Solid analytical skills as well as apply judgement based on the analysis of factual and qualitative information in complicated or novel situations.
  • Highly influential and the confidence to challenge the status quo positively.
  • Adaptive to change and have the ability to prioritise and multi-task.
  • Proven experience working with a range of stakeholders in complex environments and have accomplished change on a global scale.
  • An established capability to coach/ mentor engineers and operational staff.

Location and Roster

This role can be based in our BHP Australia Corporate offices Perth or Adelaide and offers exceptional flexibility to accommodate your availability and lifestyle. Some planned travel will be required.
