Senior Project Approvals Geologist

Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

The Senior Project Approvals Geologist will manage the Exploration Approvals process, provide Approvals advice to the broader business and mentor and train team members in Approvals. 

The role includes compiling, submitting and obtaining Programme of Work Approvals, Water Licences, Native Vegetation Clearing Permits and Third-Party Access Agreements to support the Exploration team at Fortescue. They will work together with applicants to ensure that all required information is captured accurately, and approvals are gained in a timely manner to ensure schedules are not delayed.

The role requires a strong background in environmental compliance and will undertake site-based audits to ensure works conducted are in line with approvals obtained and compliant with tenement conditions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the approvals process including obtaining POWs, NVCPs, Water Licenses and Third-Party Access Exploration Agreements as required by Fortescue
  • Manage approval compliance including conducting site-based and desktop audits, and leading incident investigations of any identified environmental non-compliances.
  • Work closely with relevant Government Departments to facilitate approvals and ensure information is accurately communicated
  • Assist with approval Closeouts and rehabilitation
  • Provide Strategy & Approvals Advice to Exploration and the broader Fortescue business
  • Provide mentoring and training to the team

Education and Experience: 

  • Sound knowledge of the approvals process in WA including the compilation and submission of Programme of Work Approvals
  • Strong knowledge of statutory requirements including the Mining Act, Mining regulations, Rights in Water and Irrigation Act, and Environmental Protection Act.
  • Experience in auditing and compliance, including incident investigations
  • 5+ years’ experience in Geology or Environmental Approvals
  • Strong written skills and familiarity with GIS Software (Arc GIS)
