We are looking for a Senior Project Engineer – Closure Readiness to join our Closure Readiness team to plan and execute a diverse range of projects that are needed to prepare for the future closure of East Weipa and Andoom mines. A diverse skill set and the ability to work with a diverse interdepartmental team are required to be successful in this role.
Working a 9-day fortnight and reporting into the Superintendent – Closure Readiness, you will:
- Plan, lead & execute packages of work to enable closure execution relating to:
- Decommissioning of mine processing assets
- Asset management planning for non-processing assets
- Tailings Dam closure planning
- Land remediation
- Shared infrastructure strategy development
- Knowledge gap filling
- Hazmat investigations
- Structural integrity evaluations
- Manage Contractor/ Consultant safety and performance
- Work and behave in a manner aligned to RT values
- Support and guide a variety of Feasibility Study teams
- Complete trade-off analysis and share closure learnings across RTA to build an operating philosophy that promotes operational excellence and long-term cost savings through improved long-term decision-making processes
- Assure projects are managed in line with RT standards including compliance with financial approvals and closure project controls processes
- Assist with external and internal stakeholder engagement
- Participate in reporting, governance and assurance processes
- Manage closure related infrastructure risks using RT systems and processes
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Qualifications in Engineering – Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or Structural (similar qualification or experience will be considered)
- Ability to manage safety in line with RT processes
- Experience in documenting & managing change
- Contractor/ Consultant management experience
- Experience in trade-off evaluations
- Experience in decommissioning, demolition, and/or construction project delivery
- Experience with Asset Management Planning would be beneficial
- Experience with water storage and tailings dams would be beneficial
- Experience with earthworks would beneficial
- Strong computing skills
- Budget management skills
- Ability to lead a multiciliary team through complex projects.
- Effective stakeholder engagement skills(internal & external)

Where you will be working
Our Weipa operations in Far North Queensland includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, shiploaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Amrun, our newest mine, was completed in 2018 and will extend our Weipa bauxite operations by decades, significantly building on our 55-year history on the Western Cape and providing jobs and supporting business growth in the region. The mine is located on traditional land. We work closely with the Traditional Owners to implement our agreements, ensuring that the benefits generated from mining support future generations and that important cultural heritage sites are identified and preserved.
