About the role

Rio Tinto Exploration is looking for committed and enthusiastic exploration geologists wishing to become valued members of our East Australia exploration team based in Brisbane, and to build a career in Rio Tinto. 

The East Australia team has a multi-commodity focus tasked with early-stage exploration in QLD, SA and NT. The program is well funded and provides an opportunity to develop as an exploration geologist and expand your geological knowledge across a range of commodity and deposit styles. We are committed to ensuring our staff are appropriately equipped to do the work we ask of them through comprehensive formal and on the job training.

We have two roles available including a Senior Project Geoscientist to lead an exploration team within a larger program and an early to developing Project Geoscientist looking for a Brisbane-based role which includes travel to projects.

Reporting to the Principal Geoscientist East Projects and working as part of a small technical team, you will:

• Undertaken program planning and management (drilling, surface mapping and sampling)
• Collect high quality exploration data
• Conduct Geological and structural interpretation of data
• Take responsibility for the HSE management of contractors
• Prepare of reports, maps and x-sections in a timely manner
• Communicate program goals with field crews, geoscience colleagues and management
• Comply with procedures and guidelines to ensure all activities are conducted safely and to a high standard

What you’ll bring

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and the team
• Tertiary geoscience qualification
• Three to ten years of experience preferably in the exploration area
• Good knowledge of the controls on copper mineralization and other structurally controlled hydrothermal mineralization systems
• Familiarity with ArcGIS, MS Office suite of tools, Leapfrog and/or other modelling software is advantageous
• An analytical mindset combined with a inquisitive nature
• Strong written and spoken communication skills including reporting capability
• An interest in and enjoyment of camping and outdoor work in remote locations

We have 63 programmes in eight commodities across 16 countries.

Both positions are based in our Bowen Hills Exploration office in Brisbane. You will work a field roster during the season which typically includes two weeks on, one week in the office and one week of rest.
