We are looking for a Senior Safety Advisor to support the construction activities associated with a number of our Iron Ore projects. You will work closely with Rio Tinto teams and EPCM stakeholders to ensure alignment and compliance to Rio Tinto systems, processes and ensure all safety requirements are met.

Reporting to the HSE Manager and working collaboratively with the site-based Health & Safety teams this role is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Support the HSE implementation of the HSE Contractor Appendices – HSE requirements that contractors need to comply with including all phases: Tender, Evaluation & post award auditing
  • Supporting site EPCM/EPC teams to implement aspects of safety procedures, management and monitoring plans
  • Communicates regularly with key stakeholders including site management, supervisors, contract partners, EPCM stakeholders and other Rio Tinto employees and external contacts within the community regarding safety targets, plans and performance improvement
  • Manages compliance with Rio Tinto Health, Safety and Environment policies and Standards, the relevant regional statutes and Health, Safety and Environment Quality Management Systems
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with project personnel, consultants and contractors to ensure smooth implementation of site work and efficient report delivery
  • Monitoring, data collection, QA/QC, data analysis and reporting of all safety requirements
  • Participate in field observations
  • Develop and refine safety procedures and work instructions
  • Provide advice and guidance to site contractors and employees to ensure they comply with safety standards, procedures and relevant legislation
  • Manage, collate and provide safety data, non-compliance information or other issues for regulatory notifications and to meet annual reporting requirements
  • Adheres and commits to Health, Safety and Environment policies and procedures

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate the following:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team (standard for all job adverts)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in managing consultants and contractors to deliver large work programs
  • Experience working in an operational health and safety role, coupled with a passion for, and sound knowledge of health and safety
  • A contracts background or an understanding of the contract’s tender and evaluation process for contractors
  • Demonstrated “project” experience in the resource industry highly regarded
  • Qualified in health & safety relevant and/or commensurate experience in a similar role
  • Strong engaging and influencing skills, with the ability to coach leaders and to think strategically
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced environment managing competing priorities supporting multiple stakeholder groups with strong problem solving skills
  • Experience using HSE Management Systems and BI Reporting tools highly advantageous
  • Adaptability and flexibility with a solutions based mind-set
  • Ability to work autonomously with reliability and accuracy
