The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position
This position of Senior Specialist Biodiversity & Conservation will provide leadership and Subject Matter Expertise (SME) service and support across our global operations to enable strategic and material risks be managed and high value opportunities be realised in relation to biodiversity and conservation.
Reporting to the Principal Biodiversity & Conservation, key role accountabilities include:
- Input into the review and update of the Global Environment Standard to ensure that biodiversity and conservation performance requirements remain fit for purpose in the context of South32 risk profile and broader industry trends
- Support development and delivery of strategic SME advice to senior leadership and operational/project leadership teams to address current and emerging issues and opportunities associated with the biodiversity and conservation portfolio
- Co-ordinate and manage the pilot trial of the South32 Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) through to global integration and implementation
- Provide support in relation the maintenance and upkeep of the ‘Land, Biodiversity and Rehabilitation’ knowledge portal (Environment Hub), including development of global tools templates and relevant reference materials that support the effective deployment of the Global Environment Standard and improved on-ground management of biodiversity aspects
- Offer input into Life of Operations Plans, Integration/Separation activities and Closure plans to ensure that current and emerging biodiversity material risks and/or conservation opportunities are adequately considered with consideration towards future resourcing requirements
- Participate in industry-wide and other key external working groups, conferences and forums, guiding industry direction and influencing future policy as relevant to South32 and the biodiversity and conservation portfolio, and communicating impacts of reform back into the business
- Collaborate with industry partners and other external stakeholders to drive industry-wide and/or regional-scale improvements regarding the management and conservation of biodiversity, with a particular focus on bioregions within or adjacent to South32 operations or major projects that are considered of high conservation value and importance
About You
You will be required to have the following:
- Advanced communication skills, including the ability to present geoscientific results to technical and non-technical audiences
- In-depth SME knowledge of biodiversity and conservation aspects evidenced through related tertiary qualifications and practical on-ground experience.
- Experience in developing and deploying regional/global programs and initiatives through leadership and collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to influence decisions and performance at both the operational and management level through effective written and verbal communication (including ppt pack development and delivery)
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face-to-face and remote)
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
- Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning, and organising
- Capable of working with minimal supervision and able to self-manage priorities, with focus on high quality outputs and attention to detail.
- Ability to engage and gain trust of stakeholders at all levels of an organisation
- Experience in external stakeholder engagement (industry, community, regulatory), including ability to influence policy direction
Qualifications
