Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s (RTIO) Engineering Major Hazards team is looking to recruit a Senior Specialist Engineer (Superintendent) – Functional Safety. This specialized position has responsibility for overseeing a small team tasked with providing Functional Safety guidance and governance on RTIO fixed plant assets. This role will require effective collaboration and management of key relationships with various stakeholders such as project teams, central engineering, site maintenance, operations teams, and autonomous technology teams.
Reporting to the Principal Engineer Major Hazards, responsibilities for this position will be to:
- Lead a technical team to implement and assure the D7 standard (Functional Safety) systems and processes
- Influence the business in ensuring a fit for purpose Functional Safety Strategy is in place for our Fixed Plant assets
- Lead the completion/development and continuous improvement to capture lessons learnt and create sustainable Functional Safety practices/designs
- Ensure the appropriate systems and processes are in place, maintained and are having an impact to manage Functional Safety
- Provide Functional Safety support to engineering activities across RTIO as required
- Coach end users on the requirements within the Functional Safety standard and how to meet these requirements
- Conduct Functional Safety auditing and governance activities
- Participate in incident investigations, change management and Authority to Operate requests
- Recommend actions to drive improvements and manage nonconformance
This permanent Monday to Friday Perth based position will work out of Rio Tinto’s Perth CBD offices and will suit a Perth resident or someone willing to relocate to Perth on a permanent basis. Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment in Australia is essential.
What you will bring
To be considered, applicants will ideally have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Electrical/Mechatronic/Mechanical Engineering and/or a related discipline
- Certified Functional Safety qualification or equivalent
- Functional Safety qualification in machinery
- A postgraduate qualification (desirable)
- Significant experience with operating, maintaining and/or managing autonomous technologies within a large-scale mining environment and/or site-based experience in the oil and gas/petrochemical sector
- Proven experience in Functional Safety within the mining or resources industry
- Sound knowledge of Australian Standards, codes of practice, Functional Safety, and safety in design
- Experience with development of safety lifecycle documentation, such as hardware and software requirements, design specifications, and test documentation
- Experience and technical understanding of balance machines, autonomous systems, and complex machinery applications
- Sound knowledge on Process control and PLCs
- Proven multi-disciplinary team leadership experience
- Proven ability to effectively communicate requirements, challenges, and options to stakeholders
- Depth of capability to identify opportunities for improvement with an interpersonal style able to influence others and manage change
- Ability to work effectively across both strategic and technical issues
