Our Cannington operation is one of the world's largest producers of silver and lead.  Located in northwest Queensland, Cannington boasts an underground mine and processing facility situated approximately 800 kilometres west of Townsville and a concentrate handling facility at the Port of Townsville. ABOUT THE ROLE

This role is a permanent position on a 4/3 roster FIFO from Townsville or Brisbane.

The purpose of this role is to provide senior specialist technical support to site-based operational and functional teams on environmental management aspects, such as: land, biodiversity, air, water and waste to enable adherence to standards, legal compliance and risk mitigation, the delivery of the functional business plan and environmental permits and approvals.

Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Manage and maintain environmental authorisations, approvals and licences relevant to the operation
  • Plan and execute environmental regulatory and internal reporting requirements relevant to the operation
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring on environmental management aspects to the junior team members and operational team/s to support compliance with regulatory requirements, environmental approvals and internal company standards
  • Provide input into the (site-based) risk identification and assessment process, including design control principles and supporting documentation, and critical control ownership
  • Maintain site-based plans/procedures/work instructions relevant to the function
  • Plan and execute work to meet environmental regulatory commitments and internal requirements
  • Manage the collection and verification of environmental data and assess compliance against relevant internal and external criteria – this may include sampling / monitoring (surface water, groundwater, soil, sediment, air emission, waste, fauna, flora etc) in remote areas in hot environment; data trending and reporting on changes within the environment
  • Report non-compliances (or target exceedances) and initiate investigations, involving operational team/s where appropriate, write up technical investigations for internal record and decision purposes and where required external reporting
  • Plan 1st line assurance activities over the operational risk profile, internal company standards and site-based environmental approvals/authorisations, and work with the operational
  • team/s to close-out the identified gaps
  • Identify and implement improvement projects that support compliance with regulatory or internal standard requirements, and/or enable a more efficient delivery of functional support to the operation
  • Support South32 Sustainability reporting processes in relation to environmental management activities and initiatives
  • Use ARC-GIS mapping tools and be competent in the use of environmental data bases, Microsoft Word, Excel and teams

ABOUT YOU

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:

  • A demonstrated understanding and experience of interaction mechanisms between soils/geology/surface water and groundwater would be advantageous
  • Detailed understanding of state and local regulatory requirements and environmental licencing arrangements
  • Sound understanding of environmental management processes and technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face-to-face and remote relationships), including external stakeholders such as regulators and community groups
  • Demonstrated ability to influence site operational decisions and performance, through effective data analysis and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills

Qualifications for this position are:

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree (Science/Engineering)
