We are looking for a Senior Specialist – Reduction.  This role, based in Brisbane with regular travel to operating sites, provides technical services to Reduction operations across Pacific Operations smelters by working closely with site stakeholders and technical teams, and by supporting or leading continuous improvement initiatives/processes. 

You will support Pacific Operations smelter technical and operational teams through leadership of Technical Governance activities such as Process Health Checks, overseeing Technical Assurance processes and developing Technical Capability through training and coaching at operational sites, assessing them against best practice.

Reporting to the Manager - Carbon and Reduction, and working in a collaborative community you will: 

  • Ensure corporate governance is promoted and applied in the use of technical systems and in the management of data globally. 

  • Conduct critical assessment of operational performance and quality data to highlight potential issues early. 

  • Support site based technical teams with critical process decisions. 

  • Attend and support site Operational Excellence and Process Stability forums. 

  • Lead or support improvement initiatives through continuous improvement processes. 

  • Support Assessments of annual site technical plans. 

  • Collaborate and partner with broader Rio Tinto Aluminium technical peers in North America and Europe 

  • Lead Technical Governance activities, such as Process Health Checks, Audits and process reviews – Assessment against current best practice. 

What you’ll bring 

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate the following: 

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your peers. 

  • Highly effective communication skills (written, verbal) and the ability to confidently conduct presentations and training sessions. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and manage potential conflict in a constructive and effective manner. 

  • Strong problem solving and data analysis skills. 

  • Comprehensive understanding of field activities and procedures. 

  • Previous experience working in Aluminium reduction lines at an engineer/specialist level. 

  • Effective time management skills, the ability to balance multiple and competing priorities. 

  • Engineering/materials science degree or comparative work experience.
