About The Design Team You’ll Be Joining

We are committed to making a meaningful difference to the 49,000 people across Rio Tinto as they do their day-to-day jobs through our software. To do that well, and to deliver on our promises as a business, we know that user-centred design matters. Across the landscape of software products needed to support a business of our size, we need to grow our Product Design team to several times its current size. Make no mistake, this is a unique opportunity to grow personally along with helping to scale a team that is driving new product development.

What You’ll Do

As a Senior User Experience (UX) Designer you will be:

• Contributing to the definition and development of innovative user experiences across web, mobile and tablet applications.
• Planning and conducting discovery research sessions (workshops, interviews, and user testing sessions) to help identify core user problems and to test and validate towards optimal solutions.
• Developing conceptual diagrams, wireframes, visual mockups, and prototypes across a variety of products and experiences.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams (designers, product owners, business analysts, software developers) to find the most effective, expedient, and efficient way to implement solutions.
• Preparing, managing, updating, and distributing UX documentation (navigational flows, wire frames, mock-ups, use cases, task flows prototypes, content, system errors, etc.)
• Using a variety of research techniques (heuristic reviews, user interviews, remote unmoderated and in-person testing) to determine ease-of-use and comprehension of designs and ideas.
• Designing, recruiting, and moderating usability studies and user interviews.

What We Are Looking For

As our ideal Senior UX Designer:

• You are able to influence product decisions with product owners, software developers, and other designers based on UX best practices, design principles and research.
• You have an in-depth understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• You have a proven ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines, product lines, roles, geographical and time zone boundaries.
• You are able to present work in a clear and compelling manner to stakeholders (be able to explain design recommendations by citing best practices, research data or business requirements).
• You have knowledge and proficiency using remote unmoderated testing tools and moderated testing devices and platforms.
• You have a strong understanding of user-centered design principles and a solid grasp of trends in web and app design.
• You have the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and communicate effectively with non-technical users.
• You are comfortable working in a high pace and iterative environment across cross-functional teams and can simplify complex problems.
• You consistently advocate for the user and collaborate with business owners to develop features and flows that align with the user’s needs.
• You are a problem solver that is excited by a challenge and will use their knowledge of UX principles to create engaging experiences across web, mobile and tablet.
• You demonstrate alignment with Rio Tinto’s values of Care, Courage and Curiosity.

And it’s essential that you have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Computer Science, Visual Design, Communication Design or other related discipline, or equivalent experience or training.
• Strong portfolio that shows insights into your UX process and demonstrates creative problem solving skills and conceptual thinking.
• 5+ years of experience as a UX practitioner with a background in user experience design, interaction design or similar.
• Worked with a cross-functional team using agile methodology from inception to implementation to deliver impactful user experiences.
• Strong skills in modern design and prototyping tools (Axure, Sketch, Zeplin, Adobe CC, Figma)
