About the role

Together with our frontline teams, we’re designing a new team called the Rio Tinto Safe Production System (RTSPS) that brings together the best practices from every corner of Rio Tinto and other industries. Our aim is to improve how we operate our assets, manage performance and support our people because we know there is a lot of potential in how we simplify our work, stabilise our operations, collaborate and share best practice across our global business.

As a Safe Production System Lead, you will be part of this exciting journey, which is one of the most significant transformation programs in our recent history. You will play a fundamental role in leading the RTSPS deployment team through all stages of the roll-out before transitioning our sites to business as usual.

You'll join a newly created team of high performing individuals, each bringing their own unique skill sets, background and leadership experiences to form a truly diverse RTSPS deployment team.

This is a great opportunity for someone who puts people at the heart of everything they do, has a change mindset and a genuine interest in our company strategy of being the “Best Operator”. You may come from an operational, technical or functional background with demonstrated leadership experience in driving change in an operational environment and developing capability. You will be managing the work of the deployment team while simultaneously upskilling team members and growing the RTSPS capability across the business.

Reporting to the General Manager Deployment, Pacific Operations, and working in a collaborative global community, you will:

  • Deliver the RTSPS framework and practices through deployment stage gates
  • Resource the RTSPS deployment team and set up for success ahead of mobilising to diagnostic phase on site
  • Manage deployment team logistics and deliverables to ensure quality delivery at stage gates, tracking and reporting
  • Ensure integration of approaches (safety, operational excellence, mindsets and behaviours, change management) and critical thinking are applied to planning the implementation of practices
  • Assess competence, provide feedback and facilitate capability development for members of the deployment team
  • Make recommendations with regards to RTSPS accreditation of team members
  • Identify and manage stakeholders who are impacted, including site GM, site and functional leadership teams, those beyond the site, RTSPS sponsors and leadership
  • Remove barriers and escalate issues on behalf of the site-based teams
  • Contribute to the refinement of the RTSPS deployment approach and practice development

We are an open, connected global team that includes some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. We offer competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop and grow your career are broad and exciting.

To be successfully considered you’ll bring your commitment to the RTSPS mindsets and behaviours including transparency, simplicity, supportive leadership, empowerment, and continuous improvement.

Your leadership experience, to create triple bottom line value, will be integral to the success of this role.

These roles within the broader network of RTSPS globally, will thrive on the diverse skill sets of team members. About Rio Tinto

Every idea, every innovation, every little thing the world calls ‘progress’ begins with a first step, and someone willing to take it: explorers, inventors, entrepreneurs. Pioneers.

For nearly 150 years, Rio Tinto has been a company of pioneers –generations of people spanning the globe, all with the grit and vision to produce materials essential to human progress. Our iron ore has shaped skylines from Shanghai to Sydney. Our aluminium –the world’s first to be certified “responsible” –helps planes fly and makes cars lighter. Our copper helps wind turbines power cities and our boron helps feed the world, and explore the universe. Our diamonds help us celebrate the best parts of life.

Where you’ll be working

Bell Bay Aluminium holds a unique place in Tasmanian and Australian history as the first aluminium smelter in the southern hemisphere when it began production in 1955. Today, it produces around 190,000 of primary aluminium each year.

The smelter is situated on the Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston. We employ more than 500 Tasmanians and more than 60 full-time equivalent contractors who, on a typical day, undertake work at the smelter.

For more than 65 years Bell Bay Aluminium has played a significant role in the social and economic wellbeing of George Town and Northern Tasmania through employment, community investment, and using local goods and services. In 2019, the site also received Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certifications, assuring customers the aluminium they purchase has been produced to the highest environmental, social and governance standards.

Every Voice Matters

At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.

We are committed to an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves. We want our people to feel that all voices are heard, all cultures respected and that a variety of perspectives are not only welcome –they are essential to our success. We treat each other fairly and with dignity regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation or anything else that makes us different.
