We are seeking a Specialist Advisor Biological Assessment to join the Biological Assessment team. The Biological Assessments team has an important role in the identification and preservation of the native flora and fauna in the Pilbara region, where our Rio Tinto Iron Ore mines operate. This team coordinates and maintains projects that support environmental approvals processes with a particular focus on Commonwealth and State listed conservation significant and sensitive fauna, flora, habitats and ecosystems.

This role will support the Rio Tinto Energy Development team (RTED) by supporting implementation of environmental approvals strategies for an accelerated program of renewables projects. RTED has been established to support and accelerate the delivery of the Rio Tinto strategy, with multiple renewable energy workstreams in a fast-paced environment to advance Rio Tinto’s decarbonisation agenda.

Reporting to the Senior Advisor Biological Assessment, you will:

  • Provide specialist biological advice relating to the delivery of the energy and climate change strategy
  • Support ecological assessments, participate in industry research and contribute toward innovation in the assessment of Pilbara biological values
  • Work effectively with the Energy Development team and internal team of experienced biologists and environmental approvals specialists
  • Work with a close-knit team who are collaborative and supportive, and emulate the Rio Tinto values

What you will bring

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • A commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and the team
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science or similar
  • Greater than 5 years’ experience leading ecological projects, ideally within the Pilbara
  • Experience in and understanding of Approvals and relevant State and Commonwealth legislation
  • The skills to communicate and consult effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent technical writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to interpret and problem solve complex issues
  • Experience with GIS software, preferably ArcGIS
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Where you’ll be working

Perth based but with a working focus on the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
