We are looking for a Specialist Area Engineer to be responsible for providing discipline and maintenance engineering support for allocated areas of the Rio Tinto Yarwun refinery. In this role you will be taking ownership of the Gas Turbines and boilers and have a strong understanding of asset condition and integrity, ensuring maintenance plans are in place and followed through at scheduled shutdowns on site.

This role is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to own an area of the plant and provide asset integrity support to the engineering, operations and maintenance teams. Working an average 40Hr work week but with options for flexible hours and reporting to the Superintendent of Mechanical Engineering, you will be:

  • Accountable for engineering support in managing the integrity and condition of equipment in the area.
  • Interface with Equipment and Maintenance owners on issues and define priorities, resources and actions for engineering support.
  • Provide engineering advice to operations and maintenance teams on plant issues
  • Coach, mentor, lead Area Mechanical Engineers, graduates, or vacation students allocated to the same area of plant.
  • Managing small plant projects to assist the operations & maintenance teams and developing improvement projects in your area
  • Perform field inspections, monitor operations, provide preventive maintenance recommendations, and provide information to optimize maintenance activities on assigned equipment.
  • Support engineering team members in the review of issues in various areas.
  • Contribute to design, constructability and operations risk assessments.

What you’ll bring

  • A demonstrated commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or comparable engineering discipline from an accredited university is required.
  • 5 years minimum engineering experience within industrial process
  • Hold RPEQ – or ability to easily obtain.
  • Engineering experience and skills in the areas of piping, tanks, vessels and rotating machinery are preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of plant engineering/maintenance practices
  • Have the capability to provide support and leadership to small team of Area Engineers
  • Experience in managing small plant projects and a Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Intermediate knowledge of SAP.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience in pressure vessels, boilers, gas turbines or calciners
  • Experience in maintenance, reliability, shutdowns or asset management.

Where you’ll be working

With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.

Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
