About the role
Rio Tinto is a global leader in aluminium, one of the world’s most widely used metals.
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Asset Integrity Specialist to be an integral member of the Yarwun refinery in Gladstone.
This is a great opportunity for a motivated, safety conscious professional to join the Engineering team that provides support and monitors the implementation of the asset management programmes. The role also supports the development and implementation of the Risk Management and Assurance framework, ensuring risks and opportunities are assessed, and effective controls implemented and monitored for both asset integrity and process safety.
Reporting to the Superintendent – Asset Assurance, you will:
- Support, monitor and report on the implementation of asset management systems and processes
- Implement improvement opportunities within asset management systems and processes
- Works in collaboration with other Business Units to improve asset integrity systems and processes
- Coaches and mentors employees to build asset integrity capability within Yarwun
- Supports the development of Yarwun critical asset integrity strategies & tactics
- Experience with Risk based inspections
- Deploys the Rio Tinto Asset Management assurance program for Yarwun
What you’ll bring
To be considered for this role, you will have:
- A degree in Mechanical, Material or Corrosion Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ)
- Demonstrated experience in asset management particularly Fixed Plant assets
- Demonstrated experience of best practice change management
- Working knowledge of pressure vessels & above ground storage tanks within an industrial environment
- Working knowledge of risk management processes and tools (Archer)
- Understanding of local WH&S practices
- A solid understanding of computerised maintenance management software (SAP)
- Good understanding of process safety concepts
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- API 580 – Risk Based Inspection
- API 510 – Pressure Vessel Inspector
- API 653 – Aboveground Storage tank.
- Previous leadership experience
- Background in the alumina industry with an understanding of the Bayer process.

Rio Tinto Aluminium – Yarwun Operations
With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.
Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
Along with Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited, our Yarwun Operation supports the local community in a wide range of initiatives through Here for Gladstone.
