About the role  

We are looking for Specialist Automation Systems to join our Team in Perth at our Operations Centre. You’ll be part of the team that governs the safe, productive and reliable operation of large autonomous mining trucks and production drills. The role aims to deliver innovative and robust technology solutions that support RTIO's operational goals and maintain a competitive edge in the mining industry.

You’ll be part of a high performing team, supported by your leader to grow and achieve your own personal goals as well as the goals of the team. You’ll work Monday-Friday, with some flexibility to work from home, which will give you more time to spend on the things that are important to you and the people in your life. 

Our department owns the maintenance strategy, technical assurance & improvement framework for autonomous mining units, working closely with other teams to deliver on our promises. Reporting to the Principal HME Automation, you will provide systems engineering expertise and be responsible for:   

  • Use Case and System Requirements Definition: Define and document use cases and system requirements using Systems Engineering methodology to guide the development and implementation of automation systems.
  • Technology Systems Design: Develop conceptual designs for technology systems and provide assurance over detailed design specifications, ensuring they meet project requirements and standards.
  • Test Documentation and Validation: Assist the project team in creating test documentation for validation and verification plans, ensuring that systems meet performance and safety criteria.
  • Functional and System Safety: Engage in the safety lifecycle for safety-related technologies and systems, ensuring that they comply with functional and system safety standards throughout their lifecycle.
  • Technical Assurance during Testing: Provide technical assurance and oversight during prototype and trial testing of new technologies, ensuring they perform as expected and meet design specifications.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Work with suppliers to develop and deploy solutions in accordance with safety practices, relevant legislation, and industry standards, ensuring high-quality and compliant technology solutions.
  • Solution Specification and Methodology: Collaborate with broader teams to specify appropriate solutions and methodologies for future technology deployments, ensuring alignment with operational needs and technological advancements.
  • Partnership and Implementation: Partner with operations teams and technology developers to implement robust automation technologies that enhance mining operations, focusing on safety, consistency, reliability, efficiency, and innovation.

What you’ll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering in a relevant field, such as Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronic, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven experience with automation technologies, ideally within the mining industry, including systems related to trains, trucks, drills, or processing plants.
  • In-depth knowledge of systems engineering methodologies, tools, and their practical applications.
  • Proven ability to engage and influence a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A proactive and resilient attitude that empowers you to tackle challenges with determination and overcome them effectively.
  • A natural curiosity and drive for innovation, with a consistent focus on identifying opportunities for improvement and advancement.

Where you’ll be working  

Based at our Operations Centre, near Perth domestic Airport. There will be the requirement to travel to site on an occasional basis.

Our integrated iron ore network is supported by our Operations Centre (OC) in Perth, a state-of-the-art facility that enables all the autonomous trucks, trains and drills at our mines, ports and rail systems to be operated from a single location. The Centre incorporates visualisation and collaboration tools to provide real-time information across our demand chain and allows us to optimise our mining, maintenance and logistic activities across the Pilbara in a way never before possible. Located near the Perth domestic airport, the OC operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to coordinate our integrated network of mines, rail, and ports from 1,500km away.
