Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Processing Operations team is currently recruiting for a Specialist Chemist and Analysis to join their Perth based team. The primary responsibility for this position will be to provide technical chemical analysis expertise to support all Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) laboratories, across both the Pilbara Mine Operations and Ports.

Reporting to the Principal Quality Lab and Sampling, key accountabilities will be to:

  • Support and drive RTIO laboratories to optimise and implement best practices
  • Implement quality assurance programs to ensure that sampling and analysis across RTIO are performed within defined ranges of precision and accuracy
  • Participate in ISO steering and technical committees on the analysis of iron ores
  • Provide advice on the application of relevant Australian Standards in relation to chemical analysis
  • Liaise with external laboratories in relation to technical competence and analysis of iron ore samples
  • Provide technical expertise for the design and commissioning of new sampling and analysis facilities
  • Support the upskilling of site personnel in instrument operation/calibration and quality assurance
  • Engage with external contractors and suppliers and monitor the quality and standard of services delivered
  • Lead and support a team of chemists, interns and/or graduates to deliver the above

This is a permanent position working Monday to Friday either out of the Rio Tinto Central Park building office in the Perth CBD or the Operation Centre near the Perth Airport with a mix of both. There will be flexibility to work from home on occasional days and ad hoc travel to site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, applicants will have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Science, Chemistry or equivalent
  • Thorough understanding of the Iron Ore sampling and analysis equipment and systems advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience in sample preparation and analysis
  • Proficiency in software such as STARLIMS and MS Office including Excel
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Current C Class drivers’ licence
