About the Role

  • This role provides critical advice, updates and support to BMA and Corporate Affairs, specifically in the government, regulatory and approval space, liaising directly between external entities and internal teams such as Approvals, Environment and Planning, which is critical to our ongoing operations.
  • This role monitors and reports on the high volume of regulatory approvals required for our operations, and co-ordinates BMA’s responses to legislative changes proposed by the State Government, which includes written submissions and committee appearances as required.  With this level of engagement, changes at this level can have significant negative impact on our operations if not quickly filled with appropriate skill set and experience. 
  • The role co-ordinates the collation and response to reporting requests such as the Queensland Statistician Office Operations Surveys, the QRC Annual Economic Contribution Report and RTI requests via Resources Safety & Health Queensland (in conjunction with the BMA Coal Legal team).
  • Aligned with the BMA Asset President’s engagement plan, the Specialist Corp Affairs and Government Relations role has been instrumental in establishing strong relationships with government and opposition over recent months, and will continue through to the State election in October (supporting the election strategy) and beyond with the incoming government and officials. 
  • The role also plays a key liaison with QRC committees and teams, and supports Head of CA and AP engagement with a range of QRC activities
  • This role is the owner of risk control of CA Issues Management, compiling monthly reports to leadership as a snapshot of issues to identify escalation points for action.
  • To help maintain BMA/BHP’s social license, this role highlights the importance of a sustainable Coal industry to Queensland by supporting crisis and issues management and provides practical and logistical support to other functions within the Asset (specifically Health, Safety, Environment, Social Value and Legal Teams) on projects on a regular and ongoing basis. 
  • Ensures the Corporate Affairs team possesses the diversity of skills necessary to lead engagement and maintain relationships and networks across the Queensland political spectrum to provide the best opportunity for positive outcomes.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:    

  • Experience working with government and industry stakeholders on complex matters. 
  • Demonstrated exposure to political environment, strategy development and issues management techniques.  
  • Experience working within a complex matrix structure, with demonstrated experience working across teams, with a particular focus on government, policy and risk awareness.
  • Strong writing, research and analytical skills with ability to coordinate and synthesize a diverse range of information to meet reporting and submission requirements.
  • Knowledge of the political and economic environment and policy making structures of Australia with a particular focus on Queensland.
  • Alignment to BHP Charter values.
  • Qualifications in Corporate Affairs, Legal, Political Science or related field.
