About Olympic Dam

About the Role

Supporting the Olympic Dam Asset Projects, the Specialist Estimator provides leadership and direction to deliver the approved business objectives, within the constraints of scope, time, quality and budget, and to identify and manage project related Health, Safety and Environment risk oversight for a diverse portfolio of capital projects. 

This is an Adelaide based position.

In this role you will:

  • Provide guidance to our engineering and independent estimating consultants for the development of capital cost estimates that comply with BHP’s requirements
  • Conduct estimate reviews, governance and assurances on cost estimate deliverables prepared by our engineering and estimating consultants for compliance, completeness and accuracy
  • Coordinate and consolidate the cost estimate or parts of a cost estimate and assume accountability of the final estimate deliverable
  • Be required to develop high accuracy estimates from first principals as well as lower accuracy order of magnitude estimates with limited scope and engineering definition
  • Facilitate and co-ordinate estimate development progress meetings and estimate review workshops
  • Be required to manage multiple estimates/projects at the same time
  • Ensure the cost estimate is developed and structured in a proper manner to align with BHP standards and Control Budget creation requirements
  • Maintain full traceability of the cost estimate to the input documents used in preparing the cost estimate and ensures consistency
  • Coordinate the consistent use of engineering deliverables, scope of work, project execution plan, schedules and other documents to develop estimate
  • Develop Owner’s team cost estimate and next phase study estimates
  • Develop the basis of estimate document clearly articulating the basis, assumptions and exclusions contained in the estimate
  • Manage the cost estimates for future changes and revisions
  • Be required to analyse tender pricing schedule submissions against the estimate and provide feedback to the Project Commercial team
  • Contribute to maintaining a cost database specifically for Olympic Dam
  • Analyse current internal and external trends and the transference of lessons from current and historical projects
  • Identify and implement improvement initiatives, including programmatic opportunities for increased capital efficiency and productivity
  • Aligns and integrates estimate development schedule with the project master schedule and maintain on regular basis
  • Consult with all stakeholders on a regular basis to ensure that any changes to the project scope and/or execution are reflected in the cost estimate and issues are raised in a timely manner
  • Coordinate, liaise, and provide support and inputs to other team members for business case justifications and investment approval documentation
  • Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader, always displaying respectful behaviours, engaging, developing and coaching within your team

About You

  • Trade or Degree qualified in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related field
  • Experience in a heavy industry, infrastructure construction or resources industry capital projects
  • Experience working as an Estimator across a large diverse portfolio of capital projects
  • Ability to influence, engage with & communicate effectively across multiple levels, business units and functional areas
  • Be accurate and analytical with high attention to detail
  • Broad understanding of principles and governance in Project Controls including sub-functions of planning and scheduling, cost, change management, data analysis / improvement, and project information management
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills to concurrently manage multiple projects/estimates through various stages of development
  • Demonstrate the confidence to lead by example, hold yourself and others accountable and coach others in ‘Safety Leadership’
  • Experience with Cleopatra estimating software (or similar) will be advantageous but not mandatory
