Specialist Cost Management – Rail Maintenance Excellence

About the role

Rio Tinto’s newly created Rail Maintenance Excellence division is growing.

We have a new opportunity which plays a pivotal role in the reporting, analytics and governance of the Rail Maintenance Division’s capital program that delivers projects that drive us to become The Greatest Heavy Haul Railway in the World.

You will work closely with senior leaders, project managers and support staff across the Rail and Sustaining Capital Divisions to ensure effective use of capital funds for maintenance and renewal activities across our railway. You will also support the Rail Maintenance Excellence (RME) Leadership Team with monthly OPEX processes including forecasting and variance analysis.

This role provides an opportunity to get exposure to Rio Tinto’s financial systems and develop a deeper knowledge of projects that support the safe and efficient operations of our vast rail network.

Reporting to the Principal Performance Improvement, your role as the Specialist Cost Management within the Rail Maintenance Excellence departmentwill see you responsible for the following :

  • Providing support and governance across the ~$550M Rail Maintenance capital portfolio
  • Governance of our Capital Planning Management System
  • Reporting and analytics of capital and operational expenditure
  • Providing guidance to project leaders to develop capital expenditure applications
  • Support project leads with financial management of projects
  • Chairing monthly capital meetings, reviewing historic performance and forward forecasts
  • Monitoring project cash flow forecasts and capitalisation levels
  • Work with other finance specialists to continually improve cyclical processes.
  • Supporting the financial aspects of our Productivity Driving Performance program
  • Identify and deliver improvement opportunities
  • Facilitating portfolio prioritisation and projecting longer term work-banks
  • Lead the Annual Planning Review process for Capital and Operational Expenditure for Rail Maintenance Division

As a member of the Performance Improvement team, you will also support the broader identification and delivery of improvement projects and work to support other departments and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, ability to work as part of a team to achieve a common goal and a passion to drive improvement. You will also have an eye for detail within financials reporting and an analytical mindset.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, your highly valued attributes will bring :

  • Experience in a finance support role and/or relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to interpret large data sets and present concise information 
  • Positive mindset and curiosity to learn new processes
  • Familiarity with RTIO financial systems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Prioritisation and organisational skills
  • Embrace task variety and problem solving
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • SAP proficiency
  • A current and valid C Class manual Driver’s Licence

Where you will be working

This role is being offered residentially in the heart of Karratha or FIFO from Perth on a 9 days fortnight arrangement : 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off roster.

This opportunity will be located at our 7 Mile Operation in Dampier, a coastal town just a short drive from the beautiful coastal town of Karratha, located in the heart of the Pilbara and home to some of WA’s most beautiful beaches.

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 15 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
