About Value Engineering Group

BHP’s Value Engineering group was established to identify, maximise, and implement value-adding capability and performance improvement opportunities across the value chain of BHP’s assets.

We are a collaborative team of data scientists, data analysts, simulation specialists, and engineers, who combine these skill areas to analyse the end-to-end value chain of BHP’s assets. The analysis aims to identify, evaluate and recommend opportunities to lift asset capability and performance in the short, medium, and long term. You will be part of this global team, reporting to the Lead Value Analytics and working alongside value analytics leads, principals, and specialists, using the data and drawing on the knowledge of operations and business subject matter experts linked with BHPs assets to design and track the effectiveness of improvement recommendations.

About the Role

As a Specialist Data Science, you will be part of a global team identifying and delivering performance improvement projects through the application of cutting-edge analytics, operational and engineering expertise. We are looking for multiple roles with varying degree of expertise; hence all applications are welcome.

You will join the Value Analytics team, working collaboratively alongside other performance and improvement specialists, simulation and data analytics professionals, and operations and business subject matter experts to address BHP’s biggest and most complex challenges.

Reporting to Lead Value Analytics, your key focus areas in this role include:  

  • Identify business and performance improvement opportunities across the BHP value chain.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure that the relevant business problems are properly defined.
  • Investigate complex problems using a structured problem-solving approach.
  • Write code and conduct analysis utilising a range of technologies and techniques.
  • Enable performance improvement by producing actionable insight from data.
  • Confidently present ideas, results, and recommendations to stakeholders at all organisational levels.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:  

  • Holds a relevant tertiary qualification and demonstrated experience in using data to solve complex problems. 
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Possess experience programming in Python to:
    • Build descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive modelling.
    • Perform structured and unstructured data mining.
    • Perform dimensionality reduction and feature engineering.
    • Apply machine learning and statistical modelling techniques.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Use a structured approach to attain project goals.
  • Have experience in exploring and proposing new ideas that may have benefits for the business.

Other highly regarded experience includes:  

  • Experience using Agile.
  • Experience using big data technologies.
  • Practical experience in mining, resources, or similar heavy industry.
  • Experience working in engineering and/or management consulting.

Location and Roster

You will be base at our Brisbane corporate office and working on Monday-Friday roster.
