About the Role

Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) Geoscience use a range of advanced data acquisition systems and tools, such as downhole assay tools, hyperspectral scanners and imagers, real-time logging and remotely sensed geophysical data.  These data sources must be processed, modelled, and interpreted for use within the geoscience and mining supply chain.  We are seeking a passionate data scientist with experience in working with geoscience data to join our high performing team in Perth.  Reporting to the Superintendent Geophysics and Geochemistry, the role will contribute to providing advanced data science skills to create products, solve problems, perform data analytics for our various customers within Geoscience and the broader mining and operations.  

The role will work closely with the range of Geoscience specialists, as well as Metallurgists, Process Engineers, Data Management specialists etc.  You will contribute to a culture of open collaboration, that fosters innovation and ‘out of the box’ thinking to capture opportunities that can create sustainable value for BHP.   

About You

You will have excellent analytical and technical skills, and the ability to deliver and communicate technically robust outcomes. Stakeholder engagement skills are a must, allowing you to build relationships across the business and to communicate with multiple disciplines at various levels.

  • Tertiary qualifications and experience in dealing with geoscientific data using solid data analysis and machine learning principles.    
  • Previous experience as a geologist, geophysicist or geochemist, and with knowledge and understanding of various geoscientific datasets would be highly regarded.  
  • Previous experience in developing data processing workflows, machine learning, deep learning, feature engineering, and knowledge of MLOps would be beneficial.

You will have a passion for problem solving and supporting teams to resolve technical and non-technical issues using your data science skills with a focus on continuous improvement.

The role has the potential for job sharing and this role is well suited to a flexible work arrangement, including working from home and flexible hours.
