Specialist Engineer (Electrical) – Rail Engineering

We are looking for a Specialist Engineer (Electrical) – Rail Engineering to be an integral part of a team of subject matter experts, providing independent review and assessment of projects and providing technical support the Rio Tinto Railways, both wayside and rolling stock on the path to decarbonisation. Working together with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including site based operational leaders, functional leaders, and asset management service providers to deliver complementary solutions to the business.

About the roleReporting to the Principal Systems, Signals and Communications the role supports and governs the implementation of asset management programmes / projects / engagements of work across multi-site environments, in addition to supporting the development and implementation of the discipline engineering framework, ensuring safe, cost effective and reliable design and installations are implemented and maintained.

This role is a great opportunity to apply your industry knowledge, and understanding of asset management, assessing possible solutions, practical approach to problem solving, with strong knowledge of AS and RTIO technical standards.

  • Provides subject matter technical engineering expertise and support to the whole of rail and project delivery teams personnel in the delivery of systems renewals and/ or engineering system changes
  • Acts on behalf of the technical authority in processes to manage compliance to engineering and performance standards by approving and managing the development, renewal and updating of system engineering standards
  • Manages, conducts and assures compliance audits against engineering standards and maintenance processes
  • Provides technical direction for asset maintenance and renewals strategies delivering business objectives
  • Reviewing design deliverables such as drawings, calculations and reports
  • Providing input into HAZOPS, HAZIDS and Functional Safety Risk Assessments and the response of technical queries (TQ), construction queries and general technical support
  • Supporting commercial activities through technical input i.e. TQ responses, technical reviews of tenders and improvement ideas
  • Ad hoc travel to our Pilbara operations will be required for inspections of plant and equipment

What you will bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Commitment to the safety of yourself and your team with a positive attitude and strong values
  • Subject matter expert with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (mandatory)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and autonomously with strong decision making capability with the ability to lead, influence and motivate
  • Practical experience working in an Electrical Engineer capacity (electrified rail or utilities, and high voltage experience is desirable)
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (highly regarded)
  • Strong understanding of the asset lifecycle, Australian Standards, RTIO standards and functional and process safety
  • Project management experience, or within a project environment will also be highly regarded.
  • A Current “C Class” WA Driver’s license
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Working knowledge of SAP, MS Office (Excel, Project etc), Primavera & PRISM would be an advantage.

Where you will be working

Your base will be Central Park in Perth Western Australia. The projects overseen by the Technical Assurance team are in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia where Rio Tinto operates the world's largest integrated portfolio of iron ore assets with industry-leading margins.

Flexible working arrangements are available. You can take advantage of an ideal combination of working remotely, from home as well as spending face-to-face time with your colleagues on a regular basis at our head office in Central Park - Perth CBD, with irregular site travel required.
