Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Engineering Major Hazards team is currently recruiting for a Specialist Engineer Functional Safety who will specialize in engineering and governance activities to support D7 standard (Functional Safety) and processes for heavy mobile equipment and autonomous mining.

Reporting to the Senior Specialist Functional Safety key accountabilities will be to:

  • Support governance and assurance of D7 standard (Functional Safety), systems and processes
  • Work closely with the operational support team to address any technical queries, oversight of D7 first line assurance schedule and auditing of internal stakeholders and technology suppliers
  • Manage performance monitoring activities related to Autonomous Mining technologies such as: periodic hazard log reviews, and continuous improvement of safety performance indicators
  • Support / Facilitate workshops and prepare reports related to impact analysis reviews for requested modifications
  • Participate in incident investigations and if required, recommend actions to drive improvements and prevent recurrences.

This is a permanent position working Monday to Friday out of the Rio Tinto Central Park building offices in the Perth CBD. There will be flexibility to work from home on occasional days and ad hoc travel to site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, applicants will have:

  • Degree qualification in Engineering or science related background
  • Operational, technical or system engineering experience within high-risk industries
  • Well-developed knowledge of mining technologies, process control systems, rail control systems, robotics, autonomous road vehicles
  • Demonstrated capability to support and/or facilitate risk workshops and safety performance reviews
  • Experience conducting impact analysis and assessment of modifications to an existing system and/or process
  • Ability to support engineering and operational teams with the definition and implementation of maintenance tactics and configuration management activities
  • Capability to translate technical or theoretical concepts into practical and relatable operational outcomes.
