Rio Tinto’s Yarwun Alumina Refinery, located in Central Queensland, is entering an exciting phase as we continue to focus on operational excellence, cost leadership, and long‑term sustainability. With a strong pipeline of site‑based initiatives across people, processes and performance, 2026 will be a pivotal year for our Yarwun team.
We are currently seeking a Specialist Finance to join our high‑performing site finance team. This role is locally based at Yarwun and reports to the Manager Finance, RTA Yarwun. The finance team plays a critical role in supporting the site by providing clear, accurate, and insightful financial information that enables strong decision‑making across the operation.
In this role, you will partner closely with site leadership and operational stakeholders to support understanding, interpretation and communication of financial performance. You will provide advice to the operations teams, contribute to planning and forecasting activities, and support the development and execution of site and business unit decisions through robust financial analysis.
This position offers the opportunity to work across a broad range of stakeholders, supporting both day‑to‑day operational performance and longer‑term strategic initiatives. You will develop as a finance partner, supporting the identification of opportunities, improving cost awareness, and contributing to the embedding of financial discipline across the site.

Primary PurposeProvides financial analysis, reporting and planning support for the assigned site or business unit, partnering with stakeholders to support understanding of financial performance and decision‑making under the guidance of senior finance leaders.
Key Responsibilities
- Support site or business unit planning, including budgeting, forecasting, outlook updates, and variance reporting.
- Interpret and explain monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results for the assigned perimeter.
- Perform financial analysis to support cost management, pricing, cash flow, and capital expenditure decisions.
- Support business analysis activities, including project evaluations and financial modelling for improvement and investment initiatives.
- Partner with site and functional stakeholders to understand performance drivers and support cost control initiatives through analysis.
- Provide clear and timely financial insights and analysis to internal stakeholders to support decision‑making.
- Maintain effective reporting mechanisms and dashboards to ensure accurate and consistent financial performance information.
- Support the implementation and use of standard financial systems, processes, metrics, and reporting in collaboration with global and regional finance teams.
- Contribute to improving financial understanding across the site by supporting financial training and knowledge sharing activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, data quality, reporting clarity, and business performance, escalating recommendations as appropriate.
To be successfully considered for this role we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Economics, or a related discipline; progress toward a professional qualification such as CA, CPA, or CIMA preferred but not essential
- Working knowledge of SAP and exposure to Rio Tinto Business Solutions (e.g. PAM, MMP)
- (or strong capability to learn site and group financial systems)
- Intermediate Excel skills, including use of formulas, pivot tables, and basic financial models
- Experience or exposure in management accounting, financial reporting, or business analysis, preferably in an operational or site‑based environment
- Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders, building relationships through collaboration and responsiveness
- A team‑oriented mindset, supporting delivery of finance activities and broader site priorities
- Demonstrated ability to identify, analyse, and explain financial variances and trends, with guidance from senior finance leaders
- Clear communication and presentation skills, with the ability to present financial information in a structured and understandable way to non‑finance stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail, with a focus on data accuracy, process adherence, and continuous improvement

Where you’ll be workingLocated in Central Queensland, approximately 10km north-west of Gladstone, Yarwun alumina refinery commenced operations in 2004. Processing bauxite from our mines in Weipa and Gove, Yarwun produces more than three million tonnes of smelter grade alumina annually.As one of the largest industries in the Gladstone region, Yarwun employs over 700 people and has a large contractor workforce.With a focus on safely improving our process every day, the team at Yarwun challenge themselves to use existing and emerging technology to support our 24 hour operation.
