ABOUT THE ROLE
The Chemist Laboratory assists in the continuous monitoring and control requirements of operating the Refinery and Mine by providing technical service and instrument support to the Laboratory.
The Chemist’s skills will be used in the resolution of quality and process issues in the Laboratory and Refinery. This will involve liaising with Laboratory Superintendent and other Worsley teams. The Chemist will have a general knowledge of instrumentation and analytical procedures and will have started gaining a more detailed knowledge of specific instruments.
This role will be based at our Worsley Alumina Refinery which is a short drive from Collie (15 minutes), Bunbury (45 minutes) and other nearby scenic communities.
As there is no accommodation on site, you will be required to drive in, drive out on a daily basis. Employees ideally live within an hour’s drive of Collie.
This role will be offered on a 6 month fixed-term contract basis.
key responsibilities are, but not limited to:
- Be responsible for your own safety and contribute to the safety of all lab personnel by adhering to work standards, ensuring you have competency for the tasks allocated to you, and understand the risks and controls of each task.
- Practice sound risk assessment and management in the workplace, including reporting of events and hazards as well as conducting quality observations. Assist in investigations as required.
- Actively promote South32 Values ensuring all policies and procedures are followed and reviewed
- Ensure accurate and prompt analysis of routine and special samples for Refinery Control and Process Engineering. Participate in investigations to resolve process issues.
- Update and development of laboratory SWIs.
- Conduct maintenance/calibration on laboratory equipment as per the maintenance and calibration schedule
- Contribute to cost reduction and management through identifying opportunities and carrying out initiatives
- Screen new process chemicals for any potential process impact as directed by the Laboratory Superintendent
ABOUT YOU
- Analytical and instrument experience working in a process laboratory desirable. In particular experience with XRF, XRD, ICAP, Ion Chromatograph, Titration and optical particle sizers would be highly desirable.
- Knowledge and understanding of the core principles and concepts related to operating and maintaining of laboratory equipment.
- Understand basic fundamentals of sample theory.
- Self-motivated, an aptitude for problem solving.
- Demonstrated capability as a team member.
- Have good interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to form effective working relationships.
- Have ability to prioritise and self-manage with minimal guidance.
Qualifications for this position are:
- University Science graduate.
- Demonstrated written and oral English language proficiency
