Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Over the years, it has developed into a vibrant and diverse cultural hub of the Western Cape. The Amrun Mine Site is located 40 kilometers southwest of Weipa with a life expectancy of 40 plus years to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.
About the role
We are looking for a Specialist - Land & Sea to lead, coordinate and execute key land and sea management programs to facilitate the operating requirements in relation to regulatory and stakeholder expectations.
This role is a great opportunity for an experienced Environmental professional to contribute to the success of our Land & Sea program whilst advancing their career with a global mining leader. Working a 44hour week which can be Monday-Friday or a compressed 9-day fortnight and reporting to the Superintendent Land & Rehabilitation, you will be:
- Leading a unique and specialised operational team of traditional owners
- Developing and implementing land and sea management programs in areas such as weeds, feral animal management, turtle monitoring and fire management within operational and outer lease areas.
- Coordinating and scheduling land and sea management activities as they relate to the Land & Sea Crew e.g. weed management, controlled burning, turtle monitoring and rehabilitation program.
- Developing and leading strategically focused research and technical projects;
- Working with internal stakeholders to enable succinct and successful programs
About you
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Qualifications in Marine Science, environmental science, engineering, agricultural science or related discipline
- Experience in leadership of specialised teams
- Experience with land rehabilitation strategy and management programs
- Experience with land management ranger programs
- Experience leading research projects
- Previous experience in managing multiple contractors and consultants in regards to environmental studies
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience using GIS
- Knowledge and Experience using data analytical and statistical tools
- Experience in marine science and aquatic monitoring programs
- Working with and leading traditional owners

Where you will be working
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
