About the Role
The Specialist Legal – IP and Technology will provide legal support for strategic and high-risk intellectual property matters (mostly commercial contracting work, not registered IP management or IP disputes), technology (particularly cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and emerging technology, such as decarbonisation technology and quantum computing).
The role will support two senior lawyers with responsibility for all IP and Technology matters across BHP, advising on an increasing volume of work in these areas.
The role will provide legal support to a wide-range of stakeholders across BHP with a focus on Technology, including the IP Hub team within Technology, and Commercial to ensure that IP- and Technology-related legal risks are identified and managed in accordance with BHP’s Charter Values, IP strategy, AI Strategy & Framework and commercial objectives.
Accountabilities:
- Advise Commercial and other stakeholders across BHP on the negotiation of IP-related terms in strategic and high risk/value contracts, and related IP issues.
- Advise Technology, Commercial and related stakeholders on strategic and high-risk Technology matters, particularly cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and emerging technology, such as decarbonisation technology and quantum computing.
- Establish relationships with relevant teams in Technology, including the IP Hub, Commercial and other relevant stakeholders and act as a key point of contact.
- Identify IP- and Technology-related legal risks and advise on the management of those risks.
- Engage with other Legal teams to ensure consistent delivery of legal support to relevant stakeholders.
- Contribute expertise to, and support, Legal and other BHP projects and transactions as required, including in respect of continuous improvement, transformation initiatives and acquisitions & divestments.
- Contribute to knowledge management activities as required, including developing and delivering training to Legal, Technology, Commercial and other stakeholders on IP- and Technology-related legal issues.
About You
Qualification
- Admitted to practice law in Australia.
Experience & Technical Competencies
- Minimum of four years experience working in a top-tier law firm or international in-house team.
Experience:
- advising on complex IP transactional matters across multiple jurisdictions;
- advising on complex technology matters, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and, ideally, emerging technology;
- proactively identifying legal risks and opportunities and advising internal clients accordingly;
- influencing and negotiating;
- operating independently, with evidence of having used significant legal and commercial judgement to manage risk; and
- developing and delivering relevant and up-to-date training and guidance materials.
