About the role
We are looking for a Specialist - Boiler to safely lead and coordinate the scheduled Major Outages of the sites Boiler and HRSG assets at our Yarwun refinery.
This role is a great opportunity for a safety focused person who is adaptable and driven, seeking the challenge of leading major maintenance works. Reporting to the Superintendent – Major Maintenance, you will:
- Be responsible for the safe delivery of major outages
- Have an opportunity to work with industry leading technology
- Manage contractual obligations of key vendors
- Develop plans and build long term strategies for the outages
- Deliver statutory compliance of key assets
- Lead continuous improvement activities & provide technical knowledge
- Monitor work of subcontractors to ensure that they meet site & HSE requirements
- Prepare work schedules for areas of responsibility, assign & communicate priorities
- Ensure parts & materials needed for completion of work are on hand
- Refine & improve shut down management procedures
What you will bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Experience in the mining and refining industry
- Minimum of 2+ years’ experience in leaderships roles managing large teams of employees and contractors in shutdown maintenance
- Exposure to SAP and Primavera
- Contractor Management exposure
- Trade qualification (or equivalent) in relevant field
- Experience in developing & leading a team of people to deliver safe and successful outcomes
It would be beneficial if you had
- Heavy industry shutdown experience specifically within an Alumina Refinery
- Excellent safety attitude and track record
- Computer literacy – Microsoft Office Suite, including MS project. Computer management systems such as SAP
- The ability to work as part of a team, inclusive management style, and proactively lead a lean team
- Demonstrated understanding of, and manage a zero based budget
- The ability to plan and complete work as planned
- Good interpersonal skills

Rio Tinto Aluminium – Yarwun Operations
With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.
Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
