Specialist Mining Engineer – Long Term Planning

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Mine Engineer Specialist to join our Long-Term Planning Team. Within the 5/10Y mine planning team, this role is responsible for delivery optimised, safe and practical long-term pit, waste dump and infrastructure designs and corresponding design reports to support 10-year mine planning and mining approval. In addition, this role will be responsible for setting up, executing and governance control of appropriate design systems, processes, and tools. The role will provide the key inputs and assumptions for 10Y tactical plans and will get the opportunity to set-up and run 5-10Y tactical schedule models (Micromine Alastri tool).

To be successful in this role, candidate must have strong interpersonal skills with good understanding of both operational and planning functions within the mining industry. The position will see you provide comprehensive mine design related skills and experience. Any medium-term scheduling skills and related Alastri software experience will be advantageous.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver quality sound mine designs (including pit, waste dumps and infrastructures) for long term planning and mining approval
  • Contribute to design report for mining approvals
  • Communicate designs to relevant stakeholders to ensure design is optimised, safe and practical
  • Liaise with operational team to ensure full execution of mine designs
  • Develop and maintain long term design process, design template, design checklist, design approval process
  • Review and approval operational mine designs as required
  • Site travel as required 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mining or similar)
  • Knowledge in open pit mining preferably within iron ore
  • Mine design knowledge and experience (essential)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Team orientation and strong ability to take initiative
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong desire to provide high quality work
  • Computer proficiency (Vulcan, ArcMap)
  • Mine scheduling experience (short and medium term) is advantageous
