About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Mine Planning Engineer to join our team, based in Adelaide to support BHP’s South Australian mining operations. We are looking for an experienced engineer, who is ready for a challenge, and keen to make a significant contribution to one of Australia’s largest, and most complex mines during a pivotal time for Olympic Dam.

Reporting to the Superintendent Strategic Mine Planning, our team’s purpose is to provide insights to sustainably grow the newly formed South Australia Copper Province. 

Within this team, the Specialist Mining Engineer provides significant input to the direction of Olympic Dam, including mine planning, guidance to major expansion projects, strategic optimisation of mining blocks and input into annual Ore Reserves reporting. This role will be focused on growth opportunities at Olympic Dam as BHP seeks to unlock the full potential of our world class orebody.

This role offers a great challenge within a multi-commodity mine, offering exposure to the broader business.  In addition to working directly with operations, geoscience and other mine planning teams, there are interfaces with studies, processing, infrastructure, closure, business planning and the BHP Resource Centre of Excellence.

This position is based in our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday with flexible work arrangements.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and communicate growth opportunities for Olympic Dam as part of the Life of Asset plan
  • Support the integration and optimisation of the South Australia Copper Province
  • Focus on understanding and supporting mine planning continuous improvement initiatives
  • Drive change through clear and regular communication with cross-functional superintendents and managers
  • Promote mine planning as the vehicle that supports, collates, and drives forward all technical disciplines and asset optionality
  • Support the annual Ore Reserve estimation and declaration
  • Provide technical support for significant mine planning projects, studies, and reviews
  • Apply divergent thought to value optimisation for the operation

About You

  • Degree qualified in Mining Engineering (or equivalent), with a strategic mindset
  • Solid experience in mine planning
  • Previous experience as a Competent Person for Ore Reserves Reporting is advantageous
  • Expertise in underground hard rock mining operations across multiple mining methods
  • Demonstrated deep technical knowledge of mine planning as an integrated activity with all other technical disciplines
  • Ability to lead or influence diverse groups of highly skilled mine planning professionals, including significant site and corporate experience
  • Demonstrated successful communication of complex issues and influencing positive change
  • Study management experience or understanding
  • Proficiency in Deswik is desirable
