We are a diverse team of talented, enthusiastic individuals who foster a culture of inclusion. No matter how they may differ, our people share one thing in common. The primary focus of the role is to create geological models that can be used by stakeholders to ensure that our Pilbara mines maximise the ore at the required product grade that is delivered into our extensive supply chain. The role will be accountable for:

  • Completion of resource models, and the reports that support them, to an appropriate standard and in a timely manner
  • Production of high-quality geological models using Seequent’s Leapfrog Geo geological modelling software
  • Construction and validation of block models using Maptek Vulcan software
  • Ensuring the appropriate level of risk is quantified and accounted for in the resource models and provide input into the drill plan
  • Completing project work as required by the team, whilst engaging with stakeholders to promote technical improvements.

  About you

The right candidate must have a degree in Geology (or equivalent) with a strong commitment to Rio Tinto Values, Behaviours and Safety. In addition, you will have:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in the field
  • An ability to manage and evaluate large geoscientific data sets
  • An understanding of sampling methods, assay laboratories and Quality Assurance / Quality Controls practices
  • A good working knowledge of 3D geological modelling software, including Leapfrog and Vulcan
  • Produced models across a broad range of stratigraphic and structural settings with a firm understanding of Pilbara geology
  • Experience providing support/mentoring to other modelling geologists
  • Resource estimation and geostatistics experience (favourable but not essential)
  • An understanding of how resource models impact the value chain from exploration through to production, mine plans and final product sale
  • An understanding of dealing with reconciliation issues to validate and improve models (favourable but not essential)
  • Demonstrated collaborative skills with multiple stakeholders
  • A drive for continuous improvement (e.g., demonstrated use of process improvement methodologies, Six Sigma etc.)
  • A current and valid Western Australia “C” class licence, or equivalent.

Where you will be working

This role is a great opportunity to be part of a collaborative team environment and develop your career further. Working 5 days on, 2 days off roster in Perth (flexible working also considered) with occasional site visits and reporting to the Resource Geology & Data Management Superintendent

As a Modelling Geologist, there are opportunities for travelling to mine sites to engage with site based Mine Technical Services and Resource Development teams.
