Rio Tinto has recently launched a dedicated team to deliver large renewable energy solutions across our major jurisdictions. Rio Tinto Energy Development is focusing on accelerating the development of future energy assets and securing high quality renewable energy development optionality. The team's focus on the provision of green energy will enable the decarbonisation of the company’s existing industrial operations and support Rio Tinto’s future growth.About the roleRTED has been established to support and accelerate the delivery of the Rio Tinto strategy. RTED will drive project delivery, with multiple renewable energy workstreams moving at pace. To advance Rio Tinto’s decarbonisation agenda, RTED will work closely with existing teams across our Product Groups and supporting functions to accelerate the delivery of renewables into the energy supply mix. To achieve this objective and to maintain future growth optionality, RTED requires Specialists with a demonstrated experience in Power Systems Development.
The Specialist will report to the Development Manager and will coordinate the engineering activities related to power system development, with a focus on power system modelling, compliance and validation. In additional the Specialist will facilitate new assets to be integrated into the power system with a focus on security of supply.
- Coordinate R0, R1 and R2 studies, develop scope for consultants to develop reports, engage Utilities, ensure technical rule compliance and compliance with engineering standards
- Develop whole of system model with DigSilent, ensure model is up to date and includes all formal scenarios RTED are investigating
- Periodically update the integrated system plan, including new assumptions, new projects, alternative scenarios, and findings from the model or other input data
- Gather load data from rail, HME and processing load on a periodic basis. Re-run PowerFactory simulations to determine if any material changes emerge with the update information.
- Engage with ISOCo, ensure ISOCo are fully informed and supportive of the RTED projects. Ensure ISOCo feedback is incorporated into current and future studies.
- Review protection designs from ECI’s/EPC’s. Engage with Utilities and DigSilent to ensure protection standards are met.
- Coordinate the development of High Voltage Work Notifications with Vendors.
- Carry out system analysis to determine network reinforcement necessary to maintain reliability, availability, stability and security of supply.
- Carry out grid reliability and security of supply modelling. Identify risks to reliability and security of supply, mitigate where possible.
- Coordinate protection systems integration into disturbance record monitoring system, network monitoring tools, and other operational tools.
- Determine required modelling to satisfy the HTR, technical rules and system security/reliability targets.
- Develop interface definitions to enable individual project grid connection testing in collaboration with RT Utilities and OEMs
About you
- Relevant tertiary education (preferably in power systems engineering)
- Protection design and commissioning experience
- DiGSILENT PowerFactory and modelling experience
- PSSE and PSCAD modelling experience desirable
- Understanding of the regulatory framework of Renewables Grid Application and Compliance process with regards to AEMO and Network service providers and the National Electricity Rules
- Grid Performance Specification development experience
- R0 and R1 study experience
- R2 commissioning and validation experience
- Ability to proactively communicate with our internal and external stakeholders
- Performance Management skills to set realistic plans, managing change, and forecasting / reporting most-likely outcomes
