We are looking for a Process & Functional Safety Specialist who will be accountable to provide support, governance and assurance for our Pilbara Mining Operations to manage Process and Functional Safety. In Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Major Hazards refer to Low Probability but High Consequence events. Functional safety is the framework used to deliver and maintain the effectiveness of critical safety functions in our technical systems. Our vision is to enable Rio Tinto to have confidence that technical systems deliver effective protection measures and control the risk.
This role will specialise in supporting the implementation, governance and assurance of standards and processes that provide the management of Process and Functional Safety across a diverse range of Assets - Fixed Plant and Heavy Mobile assets within Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Pilbara operations.
In addition, this role will be responsible to:
- Ensure the appropriate systems and processes are in place, maintained and are having an impact in order to manage Functional Safety standards
- Provide an interface between site teams and Process & Functional Safety Engineers as required
- Coach end users on the requirements within the standards and how to meet these requirements
- Facilitate collaborate development of site initiatives and improvement, assist in implementation of improvement to achieve the right outcomes for the sites
- Report on performance, and in partnership with site, lead on the development of action plans
- Support site leaders in developing and participating in effective First Line of Assurance programs (audits and assessments)
- Champion incident reporting guidelines, promote investigation methods which facilitate learning outcomes including impactful actions and assist in effective management of change – all with the purpose of driving improvement and preventing recurrences
What you will bring
- Natural communication skills with a demonstrated ability to build authentic and impactful relationships with a diverse range of leaders, site teams, and all functional stakeholders
- Drive meaningful change across multiple stakeholder groups through influence and genuine connection
- Be open-minded, have an interest in actively listening, understanding, coaching and upskilling across multiple stakeholder groups
- Ability to interpreter complex technical concepts into actionable operational outcomes which develop stakeholder knowledge whilst promoting growth in safety maturity
- Be proactive and self-motivated with the curiosity, courage and care to drive meaningful progress
- Current manual driver license
It will be advantageous to have
- Engineering qualification applied in an Operational environment (BEng in Chemical, Mechanical, Mechatronic, Control System or Electrical Engineering)
- Practical experience within the Resource Industry in a site operational or technical role
- Fixed Plant control systems experience
- Maintenance Planning and Engineering experience
- Frontline leadership or Frontline coaching experience
- Safety assurance or governance experience

Where you’ll be working
Located 110km west of Newman, West Angelas operates on a fly in fly out roster from Perth, Broome and Busselton.
West Angelas is a pioneer in autonomous technologies – we were the first site to trial autonomous haul trucks and incorporate autonomous drilling into our operations in 2008, and we continue to have one of the largest mining fleets in the Pilbara.
Our high grade, low phosphorous Marra Mamba orebody is an integral part of the Pilbara Blend, contributing both lump and fines products on around four trains each day. At the West Angelas hub there are state-of-the-art power generation and refueling facilities. These facilities supply power and diesel fuel to the East Pilbara mine sites.
The future is bright at West Angelas with ongoing growth projects at Deposits C and D, as well as additional deposits under study providing enormous opportunities for personal development and career growth.
