About the role
Our Rio Tinto Iron Ore Dampier Salt Limited (DSL) Maintenance and Engineering team is seeking a Specialist Project Engineer whose primary accountability will be to lead projects across sites through all phases of project management, from pre-feasibility, feasibility, implementation, within civil, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines.
Reporting to the Project Delivery Superintendent key responsibilities for the position will be to:
· Lead projects through study and design phases such as prefeasibility and feasibility through consultant delivered engineering studies and detailed design
· Conduct project risk assessments and HAZOPS on project proposals, including construction, operational, safety, and business risks, to determine and manage safety and business impacts
· Develop and present the projects to senior management for approval through the various project stage gates and the final preparation of the business case for funding approval
· Develop detailed scope of work packages and tender documents
· Manage Project Schedule Templates using Primavera and or MS Project
· Provide the procurement business partner with technical advice for contracts and running the project tenders and selection process
· Work with the company’s Senior Advisor for contractor management prior and during the execution phase to ensure that scope development facilitates safe execution.
· Review construction packages with CMS Supervisors for execution of onsite construction works
· Manage project costs to ensure estimates and approval levels are met and cost saving initiatives are identified and implemented
· Assist long-term planners with the Q3 planning process, providing cost and schedule estimation
· Support the Engineering team with the development of the 10-year Project Asset strategy for the site.
This permanent Monday to Friday position will be based at Rio Tinto’s corporate head office in the Perth CBD Central Park building with flexibility to work from home. The role offers a true site team integration opportunity with regular, ad-hoc site travel being vital for success in the position.
About you To be considered suitable, you must have:
· Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical or Civil)
· Extensive experience in project management and delivery (4+ years)
· Previous experience with contractor safety management
· Previous experience in undertaking risk analysis and studies
· Proficiency in the use of MS Office and MS Project software
· Site based experience in the mining and resources industry
· A proactive approach with a commitment in driving a safe and inclusive team culture
· C Class driver’s licence
· Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment within Australia
Ideally, but not essentially, you will have:
· Understanding of SAP, Primavera or other work management systems
· Experience with Balance Machine replacements
· Progress towards or achievement of a qualification in business management (e.g., frontline management)
This role will be suitable for Perth residents or those willing to relocate to Perth on a permanent basis.

The three sites are based on the northwest coast of Western Australia, our operations include Dampier, Lake MacLeod, and Port Hedland. Dampier Salt is recognised for its leadership in Safety, Quality, Reliability and Sustainability. The DSL Corporate Office is in the Central Park building in Perth, Western Australia and provides corporate, administrative, and Engineering support to DSL’s three operating sites. The corporate office also provides support to the marketing team in Singapore.
