About the Role

The Specialist Studies supports the Principal Studies in the development of projects valued between $US10M and $US250M through co-ordination with external parties and co-operation with internal teams to deliver business cases and value optimised project outcomes.   Project benefits may include improvements to existing infrastructure, new infrastructure, water management, land rehabilitation, broader social value initiatives including emission reduction opportunities.

We develop and execute projects over BMA and BHP sites that are located on the lands of multiple Traditional Owner groups, including the Barada Barna, Gaangalu and Yuwibara people. You will have the support of the broader Coal Asset Projects team and the Minerals Australia Projects Indigenous Support Network to learn and develop in the role and the broader BHP business.

In the Specialist Studies role, you will:

  • Work within the study team, assisting the Principal Studies to manage and co-ordinate the study phase.
  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, Group Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Coordinate the involvement of subject matter experts and act as the primary point of contact for technical issues. Coordinate the process for scope optimisation whilst ensuring compliance to technical standards.  
  • Develop and obtain support and approval from internal stakeholders on key project documentation and integrate functional inputs.
  • Review technical reports and translate into investment related deliverables.
  • Ensure project changes and decisions are clearly documented throughout the development phase and are formally handed over to the delivery team.
  • Coordinate risk management and value management activities within the development of projects.
  • Assist in capturing internal lessons learned and external best practices across the project and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify, develop and implement systems and processes that improve the efficiency of project development.
  • External stakeholder engagement, including with local community groups and traditional owners.

About You

  • Ability to interpret technical information and distil relevant findings into clear concise reports.

  • Engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to manage internal stakeholders, external consultants and contractors.
  • You bring your own unique style to the role and know how to have fun and still get the job done on time.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills including the ability to influence and build effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders in a complex environment.
  • Experience in a team setting managing a variety of stakeholders and projects.
  • Experience in a studies and project setting is desirable.
  • Understanding of business value drivers and value optimisation processes.
  • Strong safety culture.
  • Qualifications or on the job experience in Study / Project Management, Engineering, Finance, Science, Trades, or other relevant fields.
