About the role
We are currently looking for a Specialist Studies Engineer to join our Dampier Salt Limited (DSL) Engineering and Reliability team. You will be responsible for the development of key strategic projects through the study phases.
This role is a great opportunity to apply your skill set in project development, including scope development, managing delivery of order-of-magnitude and pre-feasibility studies, and developing business cases for key, strategic projects. Your work will set-up Dampier Salt assets for long-term and sustainable success.
As part of the wider Rio Tinto Iron Ore operations, Dampier Salt has three operations located at Dampier, Port Hedland and Lake MacLeod and is headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. Through a sustainable process of solar evaporation of sea water, we reliably deliver high quality salt essential for making thousands of products used in everyday life. At our Lake MacLeod operations, we also mine and export gypsum to customers in Australia and Southeast Asia. DSL is the world’s largest exporter of seaborne salt, with capacity to produce approximately 10.3 million tonnes every year.
Reporting to the Engineering and Reliability Superintendent, you will:
- Establish boundaries and strategies for project studies by identifying business needs, stakeholder requirements and key risks.

- Develop detailed scopes of work and tender packages.
- Complete tender evaluations from both a technical and commercial perspective.
- Lead and manage delivery of projects through the study phases (OoM, PFS) – either through engaging a consultant or completing an in-house study.
- Work closely with stakeholders throughout the studies to determine viability of options, from construction to operation.
- Ensure that safety is considered at all stages of the project cycle
- Take a cost-effective approach to delivery of project scopes, and ensure outcomes meet business constraints.
- Develop and manage schedules, workflow and deliverables, with regular reporting to stakeholders and leaders.
- Lead the studies planning and budgeting for future years
- Contribute your knowledge to developing engineering standards and specifications.
About you To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
