We are looking for a Specialist Engineer Track to provide track engineering expertise to the Railway Division in the form of technical support that will contribute to the improvement of track infrastructure maintenance and renewal strategies and engineering standards.    In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, Rio Tinto operates the world's largest integrated portfolio of iron ore assets with industry-leading margins. The key focus of this role will be to provide specialist technical leadership within the rail infrastructure team and to the wider rail division.  

Reporting to the Superintendent Track & Civil, you will be responsible for: 

  • Providing subject matter expert support to Rail Maintenance, Rail Renewals, Rail Operations, Rail Engineering, and project delivery teams. 
  • Managing the technical delivery of a small team of engineers, setting role expectations to meet the asset management strategy, objectives and plans. 
  • Implementing and assuring compliance to engineering standards / performance standards. 
  • Contributing to the development of asset management plans to meet the asset management strategy. 
  • Monitoring and reviewing health and performance of track assets, including risk profiles. 
  • Managing the Track Engineering portfolio to ensure sustainable asset performance and risk management. 
  • Engineering standards relevant and current, with structured auditing conducted on track assets over the life cycles. 
  • Track asset health/performance to optimise maintenance/renewal interventions. 
  • Track asset management plans. 
  • Review track designs. 

About you 

To be successfully considered for this role you will have: 

  • Tertiary qualification in Mechanical or Civil Engineering 
  • Eligible or working towards Engineers Australia Chartered Engineer Status 
  • Current C Class Drivers Licence 
  • Demonstrated organizational and team leadership skills 
  • Expertise in application of track engineering principles 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of asset management principles 
  • Detailed understanding of project management principles 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proficient in root cause and problem-solving techniques 
  • Exposure to a similar role, within a large complex organisation within the rail / or resources industry 
  • Ability to work in a team and safety conscious environment 

Where you will be working 

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 15 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
