Structural Geologist

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Reporting to the Specialist Structural Geologist, we are seeking the talents of a dynamic and skilled Structural Geologist to join our team.

As a Structural Geologist you will be part of a team responsible for the development and ongoing refinement of our structural models, characterising geological structures, and quantifying the associated risks to support geotechnical design and safe production across all our sites.  This is a Perth based role, requiring a strong site presence in support of our Structural and Geotechnical teams.

In this position, you will draw upon your experience with structural mapping and characterisation, geological interpretation, structural modelling, and reconciliation to ensure robust structural interpretations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Creation of structural geology models and interpretations utilising multivariate datasets from drill hole data, geological mapping, and geophysics data sets
  • Delivery of structural models for input into geotechnical analysis including confidence assessments
  • Provide structural geology support to mining operations in the form of structural data collection, in-pit reconciliation, and identifying and communicating structural risk
  • Data collection activities across multiple sites to support structural models
  • Photogrammetry interpretation to provide digital structural data in support of structural modelling work
  • Interpretation and validation of televiewer data
  • Input to geotechnical design risk assessments in the context of geological and structural model reliability
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with other business units and external parties, contribute to knowledge building and awareness, support development of structural systems

Qualifications and skills required:

  • A tertiary qualification in geology, structural geology or similar
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting geological and geophysical datasets, including geological mapping and downhole geophysics, within the iron ore industry
  • Experience in open pit structural mapping and reconciliation, structural and geological modelling, data analysis
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills, with a demonstrated ability to connect with a variety of stakeholders
  • Capability with 3D CAD software (e.g. Vulcan), along with ArcGIS software and prior experience in interpreting photogrammetry data will be viewed favourably
  • An understanding of geotechnical use of structural data and an interest in developing links with geotechnical analyses
  • Strong data management and manipulation skills
