We are looking for a Study Lead to support a global portfolio of projects focusing on effective project management and stakeholder engagement. As part of our Project Shaping portfolio, you will be accountable for delivering the study outputs safely, on time and within budget, with particular focus on our La Granja project. This includes identifying and evaluating options, challenging assumptions, mitigating risks, and delivering on opportunities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a high achieving projects professional or operations professional with exposure to projects, to develop further skills with Rio Tinto (RT) projects. Based in Perth and reporting to the General Manager, West Americas and working as part of a dynamic and exciting team, you will:

  • Work with internal stakeholders in preparing the study execution plan and related deliverables.
  • Drive study initiatives as part of RT Studies working collaboratively across the Studies business to ensure that projects are strategically aligned to the business.
  • Take responsibility for the study budget, schedule and progress by co-ordinating and tracking study activities to align with the objectives and plan, and reporting as required.
  • Work with RT Projects in relation to the execution related deliverables, as well as implementing sound study management practices which optimise decision making, record keeping, project controls and team communications.
  • Manage internal governance and approvals to move the study through review and study stage gates.
  • Support operational relations with external stakeholders to negotiate New Growth criteria which enable advancement of the study towards a successful outcome for all parties.
  • Manage and develop the performance of the study team in line with Rio Tinto’s company values, in order to achieve objectives.
  • Co-ordinate with operations on related planning and activity.

What you’ll bring

To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Proven leadership experience with effective influencing and negotiation skills
  • Proven study management or project management ability
  • Risk management, commercial awareness, business analysis & reporting, financial, and operational/business knowledge
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong experience and knowledge of the different study stages
  • An ability to understand technical and stakeholder issues and solutions outside of your field of expertise
  • A tertiary qualification in Engineering, Project Management, Processing, Geoscience, Environmental Science, Law, Business Analysis or other relevant discipline
  • You will also be passionate about delivering optimised solutions and have a natural curiosity, drive for results and appetite for constructive challenge and risk based creative thinking.
