About Nickel West

Nickel West is a fully integrated mine-to market business, with a culture rich in technical know-how, high efficiency plus a focus on innovation. Nickel West employs over 2,500 people from five operations across Western Australia comprising of nickel underground and open-cut mines, concentrators, a smelter and a refinery. Nickel West also has plans to expand its operations with new mines in the Northern Goldfields. We have a deep commitment to sustainability and have recently opened Australia’s first nickel sulphate plant in Kwinana, providing key materials for electric vehicle batteries. 

About the Role

We currently have an opportunity to join our Health, Safety and Environment team as an Environment Superintendent – Southern Operations, based in Perth. 

Reporting to the Manager Environment, you will provide leadership and direction on environmental management within the Nickel West asset (NiW).

The role will play a key leadership role in the operation’s processing-related environmental risk and compliance management.

In this role you will:  

Lead the delivery of environment operations and compliance:

  • Develop and lead a strong capable team to deliver environmental support to operational and functional partners.
  • Establish and maintain programs to manage environmental risks and environmental legal obligations across a the NiW processing operations.
  • Establish and build effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop, manage and lead continual improvement to environmental standards, processes and systems across NiW.
  • Support the delivery of strategic environmental initiatives to continually improve environmental management system, risks management and systems.
  • Provide leadership to teams through coaching, mentoring and the provision of advice on environmental strategy, systems, and procedures.
  • Actively participates in the NiW environmental leadership team to deliver on the functional purpose and foster a high performing and connected team. 
  • Ensuring that appropriate interaction occurs with government, community and other stakeholders to satisfy environmental approval processes; and    
  • Aligning deliverables with the BHP Charter, the BHP Our Requirements Documents, Code of Conduct, HP Operating System and relevant statutory requirements.

This role is offered on a 5:2 roster, based in the BHP Perth Office reporting directly to Environment Manager.  Site travel will be required. 

About You

To be successful in this role you will be able to work both independently and as part of a team.  Attention to detail will be a vital attribute, along with strong business acumen and a passion for excellence.

You will also have: 

  • Tertiary degree in Environmental Management or Science, or related field (or equivalent experience);
  • Detailed working knowledge of key concepts, theories and practices related to effective management of environment related risks.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Management System to ISO 14001 and other sustainability standards and key concepts, theories and practices related to effective management of environment related risks.
  • Experience in or knowledge of environment legislative requirements relevant to the resources sector in Western Australia would also be an advantage.
  • Extensive experience in environmental management systems, with experience in the mining and/or resource sector; 
  • Ability to build consultative and influential relationships with a wide range of stakeholders; and
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills to achieve improvement project outcomes.
