About the role
Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs
We are looking for a motivated Superintendent Geologist to lead a team of experienced geoscientists responsible for key technical processes that shape our Geoscience value chain – from generative technical projects, to tenure management and supporting the Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry teams. The key outputs from the team are required to shape and support Rio Tinto Iron Ore studies, mine plans and strategy. This role is a great opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary geoscience team evaluating Tier One iron ore deposits in one of the world’s great mineral provinces.
Whilst developing and maintaining technical standards, you can expect to be leading activities around tenure management, large scale generative work, influencing our Geoscience strategy, and technical assurance reviews. Reporting to the Manager Geoscience, you will also be responsible for:
- Developing your team’s capability through ongoing coaching and mentoring, structured training and support.
- Leading and facilitating Geoscience wide technical projects to align and implement our Geoscience strategy including generative and tenure related projects
- Devising and driving continuous improvement of our geoscience technical standards and technical tenure reporting processes working collaboratively to benchmark and adopt best practices
- Fostering a positive team culture – collaborating across departments and broader technical community.
- Owning and driving strategic tenure and geoscience initiatives to support delivery of Resource Development plans whilst assisting with our annual budget planning processes
- Coordinating and participating in technical audits to facilitate continuous improvement with a focus on internal and external reporting
- Support the embedding of new technologies across our Geoscience site teams critical to the ongoing development of our value chain
We’ll support and empower you to challenge yourself, learn from others, share your own ideas freely and achieve excellence in technical and leadership outcomes.
You’ll get to manage your own team of specialists, and work with key stakeholders across our Operational and Technical Support Division. We’ll be asking you to champion technical excellence and collaborate strongly to ensure strategic alignment for Geoscience. Safety is at the forefront of everything we do, so you’ll also be actively involved in our Leadership in the Field program along with divisional safety initiatives and best practice risk management.
What you’ll bring
- A passion for developing capability and building an inclusive team which values diversity of thought and experience
- Degree in geoscience or a related discipline paired with a strong foundation in all aspects of geoscience (i.e. use of geophysics, geochemistry, geological modelling)
- A good understanding of current geoscience best practices in data acquisition, interpretation, and geological modelling
- Iron Ore experience and a good knowledge of the geology of the Pilbara
- Excellent engagement skills and able to build relationships and collaborative environments with multiple stakeholders across a variety of locations
- A proven track record of success with guiding and leading a technical team whilst working a complex setting
- Knowledge of exploration and evaluation techniques – in both greenfield and brownfield settings

Where you’ll be working
You and your team will be Perth-based with opportunity to work flexibly from home combined with time in our Central Park offices. Our wider Geoscience team is spread across a combination of Perth and Pilbara Resource Development sites. This role is open to both full time and part time applicants. There will be some Pilbara site visits required on a very flexible basis and open for discussion how best to accommodate.
