About the Role

Broadmeadow Mine is a major underground coal operation near Moranbah in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. It produces high-quality hard coking coal for the global steelmaking industry and is a cornerstone asset in the region’s metallurgical coal supply.

A key point of difference is Broadmeadow’s Top Coal Caving (LTCC) longwall system—the only LTCC in Australia—enabling the recovery of thicker coal seams and improving resource extraction efficiency. Combined with established infrastructure, a strong safety culture, and a focus on continuous improvement, Broadmeadow offers a technically advanced and dynamic mining environment.

Broadmeadow also has a strong future outlook, with multiple mine extension pathways under evaluation to sustain and potentially expand production. These opportunities reinforce its long-term role in BMA’s portfolio and position the operation for continued contribution to regional employment and global steelmaking supply chains.

We are currently seeking an experienced Geology and Geotechnical Superintendent to join the Broadmeadow Mine Planning team. This role leads a multidisciplinary geology and geotechnical function of approximately 35 personnel, including employees and contractors, providing strategic leadership and technical direction across the operation. This is a full-time role with residential or FIFO options, on a Monday to Friday roster with support for flexible work arrangements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the site geotechnical and geology function to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient underground operations within a Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) environment.
  • Provide strategic direction and technical oversight of strata control, ground support design, and geotechnical risk management.
  • Provide strong leadership in geotechnical governance, ensuring all strata control practices, standards, and systems are robust, compliant, ensuring alignment with statutory obligations and BHP standards
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve geotechnical management plans, standards, and monitoring systems aligned with regulatory and BHP requirements.
  • Oversee strata monitoring programs, data analysis, and reporting to support proactive decision-making and hazard identification.
  • Partner closely with Mine Planning, Operations to optimise design and extraction strategies
  • Lead incident investigations related to ground control and drive the implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Build capability within the geotechnical team through mentoring, coaching, and development of technical staff.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, consultants, and corporate technical teams.
  • Support life-of-mine planning and evaluation of future extension opportunities through geotechnical input and risk assessment.
  • Provide direct leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to the geology team, ensuring delivery of high-quality geological models, data integrity, and operational support
  • Plan and govern surface-to-seam drilling programs, ensuring delivery of high-quality geological and geotechnical data while facilitating operational services

About You

  • Degree qualified in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or a related discipline, with significant underground coal experience
  • Extensive experience in geotechnical and geological functions within longwall operations
  • Proven leadership capability, with experience building and leading high-performing technical teams
  • Strong background in geotechnical governance, including development and assurance of plans, standards, and critical controls
  • Demonstrated ability to manage strata control, ground support design, and geotechnical risk in a complex underground environment
  • Experience integrating geology, geotechnical and mine planning to optimise safe extraction outcomes
  • Hands-on experience with surface-to-seam drilling programs
  • Strong working knowledge of Queensland coal mining legislation and statutory requirements
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) or the ability to obtain, highly regarded
  • Confident communicator, able to influence stakeholders across operations, technical teams, and senior leadership
  • Commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and maintaining the highest standards of compliance and governance
