Carrapateena is a large, modern underground copper‑gold operation and one of South Australia’s most significant mining developments in the past decade. Located approximately 160km north of Port Augusta on the traditional lands of the Kokatha people. Carrapateena combines cutting‑edge mining methods with a strong focus on safety, innovation and performance.

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, you will lead a team supporting the integrity, safety, and geotechnical risks at BHP’s Carrapateena operation.
The Geotechnical team is responsible for supporting safe production of the deepening SLC whilst developing a brand-new block cave (and associated infrastructure).
This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a challenging leadership role at an operating caving mine, that is also in the process of expanding to block caving.
Through insight and innovation, you will identify and implement improvement initiatives that enable functional excellence and support business priorities for continuous improvement. It is essential you can develop and maintain effective working relationships with the operations teams, project teams, and other departments.
This position is based at Carrapateena on a 4 days on / 3 days off FIFO roster from Adelaide.
In this role you will:
- Oversee geotechnical risks, and make further development in material risk framework as we transition from SLC to BC
- Lead and develop a team of Geotechnical professionals focused on planning and governance of SLC and associated activities along with readiness activities for the block cave
- Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader by engaging, developing and coaching your team whilst ensuring an overriding commitment to health, safety, environment responsibility and sustainability
- Build business partnerships and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders internal and external to the business
- Positively shape culture in alignment with the BHP Charter Values
- Identify, build and develop team capability through ongoing and regular coaching and development
- Build effective relationships across departments to support the delivery of improved production
- Encourage and promote continuous improvement by constantly looking for opportunities to improve work practices and procedures
About You
- Geotechnical Engineering and leadership experience in an underground metalliferous mine
- Cave mining experience preferred
- Undergraduate qualifications in either Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or Earth Sciences (Geology, Geophysics)
- Implementation of geotechnical processes and systems
- QAQC of ground support systems
- Material risk management experience
- Geotechnical mapping, monitoring systems, ground support calculations / designs and stability analyses
- Establishing and/or maintaining aspects of a geotechnical management system
- Collection & interpretation of geotechnical observations and geological data (structure)
- Experience using mining\geotechnical software (Deswik, MxRap, IMS suite, Leapfrog)
- Demonstrated experience in the creation and growth of engaging, supportive & inspiring team culture
- Experience in the development and delivery of strategic and tactical plans, and management of complex and competing priorities
- Leadership experience and engagement of teams that support high quality and engaged delivery
- Experience implementing continuous improvement strategies with financial and commercial acumen
- The ability to engage and find positive outcomes with internal and external stakeholders
