Operations near and far

Located in the Great Sandy Desert in East Pilbara, Western Australia, Telfer is a fly in out fly out operation from Perth which recognizes the importance of work-life balance.  Our comfortable, well furnished rooms include Foxtel, and our site offers quality food with healthy options, medical care, sports and recreation activities. Families are welcomed several times a year to open days to support our community feel at Telfer. 

Who we’re looking for:

Reporting into the Manager – Health, Safety and Risk, a permanent opportunity has arisen for a Superintendent – Safety, Emergency Services & Security to lead and support a team of high performing safety professionals whilst maintaining a close working relationship with the wider site.

The Superintendent – Health, Safety and Risk provides safe, efficient, and cost-effective operational control across Telfer’s health and emergency services departmental operation in accordance with legal requirements and company objectives. You will also demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe working environment.

A few key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Safety Management System ensuring a safety-first work culture
  • Ensuring safe systems of work are in place for all activities; ensuring personnel are trained, inducted and competent to perform work; ensuring competent supervision
  • Ensuring adequate pro-active monitoring to maintain a safe work environment
  • Identifying key risk events for site that may require Emergency Response capability; documenting controls for those credible risk scenario’s including requirements for local scene control, emergency management and linkages to the corporate crisis management function within the site emergency management plan
  • Ensuring management plans are developed to provide assurance the required emergency response assets and people are in a state of readiness
  • Lead the site’s Health and Medical team to ensure as safe and healthy workforce
  • Promoting a site wide, team-based culture between employees, departments and contractors
  • Working closely with departmental personnel developing, planning, and implementing strategies to maximise operational efficiency
  • Developing and supporting the team to continually improve the operational processes; developing and progressing EDGE projects

You will be safety-and health focused, team-oriented, enable and drive continuous improvement and be willing to strive for results whilst demonstrating leadership with the highest professional and ethical standards ensuring all actions are transparent and in accordance with company policy. 

Ideally, you will also have the following:

  • Demonstrable operational experience in a safety, health or Emergency Services role within the mining or heavy industry
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in health and safety or similar
  • Previous Superintendent and/or leadership experience, leading teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills

We are looking for an experienced leader who is familiar with working in a highly collaborative environment with a strong emphasis on innovation and best practices.

Please note: This is a permanent role, FIFO from Perth Telfer on an 8 days on/6 off
