Health and Safety Superintendent

Work Location: Fortescue’s Cloudbreak mine is located on the traditional lands of the Palyku and Nyiyaparli peoples.

Roster: 8D/6R

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager at Fortescue's Chichester Hub, you will be responsible for supporting site operations and assisting with the implementation of Health & Safety Management Systems to ensure continual improvement in a dynamic mining environment. Managing the day to day management of safety, medical and emergency functions, you will also play a key role in coaching senior and line management in all aspects of Health and Safety excellence.

Whilst working with the Fortescue values, you will have the opportunity to make positive change by coordinating the continuous improvement and compliance of our Health and Safety Management systems, assist the operations with Fortescue’s Incident Management System and actively participate in the implementation of the Fortescue Major Hazard Program.

To be successful in this role you will poses strong leadership qualities and traits that allows you to effectively influence others to display the correct values, behaviours and actions. You are passionate about the health and safety performance of the operations and have a strong interest in engaging operational department stakeholders to ensure safety is a key focus when making operational decisions. You have the ability to bring people together and have a team working to achieve common goals and a proven track record in problem solving and make practical decisions in a dynamic environment.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Participating in the control of identified hazards where appropriate
  • Utilise systems and analyse data to inform decision making resulting in project/business improvement initiations and business change.
  • Facilitate safety investigations and implement harm minimisation strategies
  • Support line management to ensure that all safety requirements are adhered to, in compliance with all statutory regulations
  • Be actively involved in the Fortescue Contractor Management Audit process
  • Liaise with line management, consultants and Government bodies
  • Establish and maintain contactor management and lead ICAM investigations
  • Engage with external service providers, stakeholders, and associated companies to build sustainable relationships and identify mutually beneficial service solutions that will deliver positive outcomes for Fortescue.
  • Assist with the development of Hub HSES Strategic plan and help to manage/track progress against annual improvement/implementation plans.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years Health and Safety industry experience
  • Demonstrated and proven Safety Lead/Superintendent experience
  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Health, Health, Safety, Hygiene or equivalent post graduate qualifications
  • Previous experience in the Mining or Construction industry will be highly regarded
  • Safety Auditing qualification (Lead Auditor) and an awareness of the Work Health and Safety Act & Regulations
  • Experience in management systems development and implementing Risk Management frameworks
  • Experience in project management would be highly regarded
