About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Communities and Social Performance Weipa, the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage works closely with the Superintendent Cultural Heritage Technical, Integrated Operations and Ore Body Knowledge teams to safety and efficiently deliver cultural heritage clearances on significant tracts of land annually.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe Superintendent of Cultural Heritage will:
- Provide leadership and direction to the Cultural Heritage team.
- Embed a culture of operational and phycological safety, ensuring a high standard at all times
- Work closely with the Superintended Cultural Heritage Technical and appropriate central teams to ensure the delivery of agreed clearance plans.
- Develop and maintain respectful relationships with all Traditional Owner groups, the surrounding community and internal and external stakeholder.
- Liaise with Traditional Owner groups on site protection plans; implement actions arising from those plans.
- Apply professional knowledge and expertise to advise on, implement and deliver key Communities and Social Performance initiatives, systems and/or programs.
- Provide professional advice and support on significant business cases/deals and input into areas of technical expertise.
- Develop and improve policy, processes and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with legal and other commitments and company policy and standards.
- Represent the organisation at community gatherings and or role-related forums.
- Manage cost compliance.
What You’ll Bring
- Heritage Awareness & Understanding
- Current C Class Drivers Licence
- The ability to influence and manage stakeholder relationships
- Experience working with Indigenous communities
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- A detailed knowledge of safety systems (Rio Tinto or similar), including field application and assurance.

Where you’ll be working
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tons of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape
