Work Location: Solomon Fortescue’s Solomon mine is located on the traditional lands of the Eastern Guruma and Yindjibarndi peoples.

Roster: 4D/3R FIFO ex Perth - Roster flexibility considered

We are seeking a highly motivated leader to join our Solomon operations team as a Superintendent responsible for accurate and timely delivery of 2 year and 3 month mine schedules.

Reporting to the Manager Operations Planning, the successful candidate will be responsible for all medium-term design and planning activities and site based Geotechnical support to optimise production at our Solomon mine. This role requires strong interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with various internal and external stakeholders as well as the ability to articulate complex risks/opportunities to both technical and non-technical teams.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills will be essential for developing systems that contribute to business wide commitments on decarbonisation. Your team will be located both on site and in our Perth office, and you will be required to attend both locations to regularly engage with them.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for accurate and timely delivery of 2 year and 3 month mine schedules, including costing of mine plans for use in budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Optimise and deliver operational pit designs and related infrastructure designs to maximise the value to the business
  • Liaise with support functions, including Approvals, Heritage, Geology, Geotechnical and Hydrogeology, to understand risk and opportunities to the operation
  • Assessment of mining methodology options for both cost and productivity metrics
  • Communicating options, designs and plans with relevant stakeholders, including General Managers
  • Delivering product quality, pit progression, waste schedules, fleet requirements and other technical guidance as require
  • Responsible for leading the on-site Geotechnical team, enabling them to provide effective guidance and support to operational teams and keep our people safe
  • Play a key role in problem solving and implementing systems that support our rapid transition to business decarbonisation

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Proven experience of leading and developing engaged, empowered, and efficient teams  
  • Capability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation including commercial
  • Strong medium-term planning skills (3 Month and 2 Year Planning), knowledge in open pit mining, preferably in iron ore and a practical approach to engineering and design problems
  • Ability to build, interrogate and troubleshoot ATS mine planning models highly desired
  • Proven strong analytical skills and statistical problem-solving abilities
  • Tertiary qualification in mining engineering or similar
  • A willingness to challenge the way things are done and implement system improvements while developing your team along the way
