About the role

We are looking for an engaging Superintendent Operations Major Hazards who will be accountable for leading a team, who support our operational sites managing Major Hazard risks (Functional and Process Safety).

You will be responsible for communicating requirements, providing guidance and assisting site leaders with the implementation of changes at an operational level to ensure that the Major Hazards associated with the rapidly expanding technology footprint at Rio Tinto Iron Ore, are managed to be As Low As Reasonably Practical (ALARP). You will work closely with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The scope of work you will be accountable for is challenging and diverse. Your demonstrated ability to engage, connect and positively influence key stakeholders at all organizational levels will play a critical part to the effectiveness in this role.

  • Lead a team of Specialists to ensure the effective provision of technical capability on our sites
  • Be an inspiring role model and coach for positive behaviours, practices, and processes, whilst providing leadership, development, and support to your team
  • Provide availability and provision of on-site expertise, guidance and support to manage our Major Hazards (Functional and Process Safety) adequately
  • Ensure the appropriate systems and processes are in place, maintained and are having an impact in order to manage Major Hazards
  • Support site leaders in developing and participating in effective first level of assurance programs (audits and assessments)
  • Identify, plan for and lead the implementation of improvement opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with several functional teams and vendors to ensure sites are adequately equipped to manage Major Hazard risks
  • Improve our approach with regards to Autonomous Safety

What you’ll bring

  • A strong safety focus, demonstrating a commitment to your own safety and to those around you
  • A passion for your people development paired with a genuine care for their physical and psychological safety, being an advocate for an inclusive and respectful culture
  • Several years site experience with Operating, Maintaining and/or Managing Autonomous Technologies within the Mining Environment, OR site experience in the Oil and Gas / Petrochemical sector
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the demonstrated ability to interact with individuals both internal and external to the business at all levels
  • Able to work in an environment that requires agility and the ability to make decisions in a timely manner
  • Transferable skills from other relevant industries will be held in high regard

Where you’ll be working

You will be Perth-based with opportunity to work flexibly from home combined with time in our Central Park offices. There will be an expectation to perform Pilbara site visits from time to time to solidify your relationships with operations, however this will be done on an ad-hoc basis.
