About the Role
The Rail Operations team are thinking big for the future of Heavy Haul Train Driving in WA and have established the Rail Academy Trainee Train Driver program.
Through BHP’s Rail Academy we are delivering a nationally recognised curriculum and training pathway for heavy haul train driving. Our facility has been established in Port Hedland, Western Australia and has been strategically built to bring the classroom, virtual reality simulation training and in-field rail training closer together.
In this position you will be responsible for providing guidance and leadership to a team of Supervisors in executing the training plan whilst achieving safe and optimal outcomes for your team. This role is well suited to someone who has strong people leadership capability and is looking to be part of a team which is shaping our frontline operational training processes in Rail within a changing and diverse workforce.
The Rail Academy Superintendent manages Supervisors, Rail Academy Trainees and Training Coordinators and so a background in a frontline leadership role would be an asset.
This role is based in Pt Hedland and can be offered on a 5/2 Residential or 5/2, 4/3 FIFO basis (with flex).
Reporting to the Manager Rail Academy, key responsibilities in this role will include:
- Be first and foremost focused on creating a culture of care by being a visible safety leader by engaging, developing and coaching your team
- Mentor and set the standards around safety, field leadership, hazard reporting and improvement
- Endorse and lead the execution of our training plans and monitor the effectiveness of these plans
- Balance Supply Chain requirements with training plan commitments and continually evaluate and implement opportunities to improve.
- Lead performance standards and compliance to performance tracking and course completion
- Demonstrate understanding and alignment with our people leadership processes, 1:1’s, development plans, training plans and supportive leadership.
- Evaluate safety and operational performance and drive change to achieve safety, cost and training targets through processes, infrastructure, and technology initiatives.
- Oversee the recruitment of future cohorts of trainees in partnership with key stakeholders the Talent Acquisition team.
- Develop and distribute communications updates as required
- Operate in a proactive manner and work collaboratively and effectively with key stakeholders across Rail
About You
To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced leader preferably with a background in rail or the resources industry with exposure to a rail environment.
As the successful candidate, you will ideally possess the following;
- Demonstrated experience in a similar level role
- Qualifications and experience in training and development is preferable, however not essential
- Solution-focused with the ability to work under pressure
- Foundational leadership skills and an understanding of the importance of mentorship, leading by example and coaching
- A genuine passion and drive to create a more inclusive workplace which is free from harassment, discrimination and victimisation
- The ability to work effectively with others and provide constructive feedback where appropriate
